Off hand, is anyone able to list the "fly fishing only" waters in Virginia and Maryland? Specifically, I'm trying to determine if Beaver Creek, MD or others prohibit spin fishing with artificial lures. My son, who has taken to fishing with me prefers to throw flies on his ultralight spinning rig over his fly rod. He might pick up the fly rod again, but I'm not pushing him too. I'm just happy my soon-to-be eighteen year old wants to fish with me.

This is a good question - I'd like to know as well.  In Missouri, "fly fishing only" sometimes just means the use of artificial lures, so using a spinning rod falls under it.  The Current River (trout) is a good example of this designation.

Mossy creek is the only one I know in VA.

Thanks, Gene. Mossy I was sure about.  I might just have to contact tackle and fly shops near places we want to fish.  The lower section of Beaver Creek, Md probably is, I've fished and don't remember though.

Thanks, Don. There are some other private waters that are too, but not mentioned on the DGIF or MD DNR sites.

I think Beaver creek MD is fly fishing only from what I recall.

The mid and upper portions near the hatchery might not be though. I'll check on that.

According to MD's DNR, Big Hunting was the first in the state to be fly fishing only.  http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/recreational/fwhotbighuntingcreek.html

There are a few others listed on http://www.trails.com/stateactivity.aspx?area=13872 for all around the DC area and a bit beyond.

FWIW.

Beaver Creek MD has a section that runs from directly behind the fly shop up to the hatchery that you can spin fish (I believe that its single hook artificial only). For more info and some advice on the the stream call James at Beaver Creek Fly Shop (301) 393-9090. Last time I was there he was putting together a detailed map of the creek with access points.
