Thanks to everyone for coming out Sunday to the Gunpowder. It was a beautiful day, quite brisk in the morning.  Thanks especially to Richie and Joe for the breakfast pancakes and coffee.

Personally, I blanked.  I had one grab (I prefer to swing and strip (no, not that kind of activity)), and that was it.  I tried hard, working downstream from the parking lot maybe 300 yds, presenting to all kinds of holes and structure, thinking for sure some fish would play.  Nothing doing.

We will have another such trip soon, upcoming is shad season.

Well, I had one one those learning experience days, too.

Nevertheless - wonderful to be out on the water and see everyone come out to play.

Thanks for helping me out that weekend.  Looking forward to more outings…Shad season is coming!

What kind of line is recommended for shad, sink tip or full sinking?  I have a 9 foot 5 wt and thinking about overlining to a 6 wt line to get the line down faster.  Thoughts?

I'm mo expert, but a sinking line with whiter leader is your best bet.  Watch this presentation from last year  from NCC TU How to Fish for Shad on the Potomac and Elsewhere - John Kuriawa.

There was a virtual shad fest on 2/24/22 that I think will also be posted.

Cheers,

I dont know why autocorrect turned "shorter leader" into "whiter leader" but I meant shorter.  If the leader is too long, the fly will be closer to the surface than the sinking line, which isn't the point of using a sinking line.

I was going to make the same suggestion that Greg did re: NCCTU presentation, but he beat me to it.  Gregg

Maybe it was a reference to A Whiter Shade of Pale? (Gary Brooker, RIP)  ;-)

Full sinking line for sure.  At times you can catch some hickories on a sink tip, but you are handicapping yourself going that route, especially if you hope to catch americans.

Anyone have recommendations for a good line to purchase or even have a used one I could buy that is in good condition?

The line I’ve been using for a long time has a 30’ 200 gr. Sink tip on it with intermediate running line.  Scientific Angler ( District Anglers ) and Orvis sell them.   It would work fine on. 5 or 6 wt.   I keep my leader about 4 ‘ of  8 lb. Mono.    This has proven very successful over at Fletchers.   If you have a 7 wt. rod. Go up to a 250 or 300 gr. Line.

And practice casting it on your rod.  The heavier line behaves differently. The cast ends up feeling like it is in slow motion.  If you get a line, bring it out to casting church and practice a bit.  .
