I'm new to boating and I'd like to buy a boat for the family mainly for fishing but some cruising too. I live a few minutes from Seneca Landing boat ramp, and I'm wondering if there are certain multi-use boats suited to the Upper Potomac (say, Seneca Landing to Brunswick). I was initially looking at a Crestliner 1950 Superhawk (roughly 20') with a 150 or 200 outboard, but that may be way too much boat for this stretch of the river. I'd appreciate any advice.

Also, is there a good location to download navigation charts for the Upper Potomac?

You could check NOAA's web site, but I think their focus is on navigable waters, namely the lower/tidal Potomac. There's this: http://www.riverexplorer.com/  and you could check with ICPRB, https://www.potomacriver.org/

I'm not sure where I discovered this (maybe here), but there's a great opportunity to try out boats on the water on Saturday, June 11. It's down past Charlottesville, so you gotta want it...

I wanted it so I went and got it last June: Appomattox River Co demo day is excellent. I went to try as many kayaks as possible and it was fun but also mind boggling the number of makes and models of boats available to try. They'll provide a PFD, but it you have your own, take it with you. Factory reps will be there not only for the boats but also for accessories, paddles, etc.

You need a jet for that stretch of the river....that Crestliner is great but you will knock the lower unit off in no time. The only other suggestion for  bigger boat up there (prop) is something with a tunnel hull and jack plate. G3 makes one.

Plenty of nice jet boats for choices.

Lots of folks that run a prop in the upper river have smaller boats with smaller engines and they protect their props with some type of a  prop saver device.

I have a 17' Targa  with a 115 and NO WAY would I take it up there even though I store it at Algonkian.

Good luck!
