Anyone have experience wetting a line in the greater Charlottesville area?  Spending the majority of next week in Hoos country and was thinking of bringing down my gear.

Any recommendations / guidance would be much appreciated!

Best regards,

Jack

Jack-  plenty of solid blue lining for brookies west and south west of town. I fished near Crabtree Falls last year. You can go over the Mountain to Waynesboro. I’m sure the UVA crowd will chime in with more specific spots.

Be sure to stop in to Belle in Cville for donuts and sandwiches.

Jack,
A few more thoughts.
South River in Waynesboro has stocked Rainbow/Brown trout. It is easily accessed from the center of Waynesboro.
Mossy Creek is near Bridgewater (requires a free permit available on DWR licensing site)
North River is in the GW national forest near Stokesville Market and Supply. Upstream of Elkhorn lake is brookie water. Downstream of Elkhorn lake and Staunton Dam is stocked. Need Forest Service fishing permit (available on DWR licensing site) in addition to State licenses. The average Crossover or SUV shouldn't have any problems on the forest service road (95) in that area

MY KLAXON!

Besides the spots mentioned above. I'd add for trout: Whiteoak in SNP, the Moormans (only 30 min or so from town although there's a bit of a hike to the good water; it's a very popular stream-stocked water below the dam, brookie water above although you need to go past the third stream crossing to get to good water), and in addition to SNP bluelining, GWNF/TJNF bluelining. I feel like eastern slope streams get marginally less pressure than western slope streams. RE: the North, you don't even need 4WD, my Prius got up to the brookie water there fine.

For bass/other warmwater: the Rivanna has some good smallmouth water around where 29 crosses and maybe by Riverview Park although it's not good wading. I've also heard good things about the Maury around Goshen Pass (bit of a drive but there you go) and the James by Peaks of Otter although that's kind of pushing "Charlottesville area"
