Was thinking of going to the pocosin or rapidan next week--has anyone been down there lately? Do you think it's worth checking out or will it still be too hot? I've never fished down there in Sep. before.

If anyone is interested in joining the fray, I was thinking of venturing out on the Monocacy on Friday afternoon.

The Monocacy is apparently a pretty good warm water fishery -- but I'm generally passing over it to get to other places ;).  I'm sure it's fun to fish.

I use the Culpepper-Rap gauge to estimate when the SNP streams are really too low to bother fishing.  I keep a notepad with conditions, etc. in the truck every weekend we go fishing so I can refer back to it and remember things.  I personally wouldn't fish any of them at present, but I won't tell anyone what to do.  One thing about fishing in low water in the summer is you definitely learn a lot about fish holding places, and stream bottom structure ("bones").  Go to Urban Angler and talk to Grizzly about the time he was fishing the Savage and someone pulled the bathtub plug on him ;).

The easiest way to fish the SNP streams is to just go do it whenever you feel like it and just don't talk about it on here for 5....maybe 6 months of the year.

A decent bit of rain is expected this week, at least. But if the rain doesn't come through, I wouldn't bother.

Can't speak to the upper stretches, but fished the lower Rapidan for smallmouth 2 weekends back, and it was low and slow.

So according to Weather Underground, the Mossy/Beaver creek area got around 1.6 inches of rain yesterday and is expected to get close to an inch on Saturday; the Rose/Robinson River/Whiteoak Canyon Area (Syria) got an inch yesterday and is expecting close to an inch on Saturday. The Hughes probably has decent/acceptable flow now.

I'm heading out on Sunday, probably for brookies, and will provide a report.

Sounds good Ashley -- I'm stuck at the archery range tomorrow, which is the only substitute for fishing that I'm willing to accept ;).  Based upon the gauge height now versus when we were last out there, I suspect you'll be doing a lot of pool-hopping and crawling.....not that it can't be fun ;).  Of course, the rain today could throw that assessment out the window.

Upon further reflection, I'm going to head to Dry River. I'll probably wait for SNP until the trout stocking begins at the end of the month/early October. Report forthcoming.

They stock trout in the SNP?

Cheers,

I mean the hughes, robinson, rose rivers; hit them once stocked and fish the nearby snp brookie streams in the same trip.

I fished both rivers about 3 weeks ago. The Pocosin was very productive but many of the trout were so small that I had a hard time hooking up with a #16 Mr. Rapidan. I hit the Rapidan River later in the afternoon. The fishing was slower and there were a lot of people there. If you're thinking of trying the latter, I'd suggest fishing either the middle third or the upper third of the river. The water down in the Graves Mill/Staunton River area was too warm the last time I was there.

Well, Dry River wasn't too much fun. Despite the recent rain, water levels were still pretty low, although the water was plenty cold. I pulled around 6-8 brookies and missed about as many. I headed over to the lower public section of Mossy Creek, which had decent but not great flows.

Wish I had seen this sooner, could have saved you the trip.

Water levels in the mountain streams are low pretty much across the board. Best action recently has been for smallies on the upper Potomac. However, with that last low pressure system and cooler nights taking over, I'd expect to see a yellow stone fly hatch sometime soon.  In which case, pray for rain to bring up the water levels.
