Moving to DC

Hi Guys!

I am moving to the DC area in December and I want to hit the ground running with my fishing.  I am interested in getting a two-hander and wanted to see if people are actually doing that on the Potomac.  I figured you guys are the best people to ask.  IF you are, what are you using (switch or full spey, length, wt, scandi or skagit, etc?)  Look forward to hearing from people.

I rarely fish a two handed around here. I use a 6 or 8 weight 11' switch when I do. We'd use them during the shad run and when targeting stripers in tight spots.

People use them around here but I think it is more just for the sake of using them rather than because they are the most practical tool for the job (in most cases).  The exception would be in the Potomac during the shad run if you are fishing from shore.  There are only a handful of places that allow for an easy backcast and they are frequently taken, so having the two hander is useful in those situations.  There are a couple places where you might fish for stripers where a two hander would be useful, especially if you are a right handed caster. 

I personally wouldn't buy a two hander just to fish around here but they are all I use for steelhead fishing so by all means get one if you think that is something you will be into. 

If you are going to go with a two-hander, Skagit heads and heavy tips are generally what you want to be thinking, at least for the Potomac itself.   I use a 13 foot 7 weight when I do.

I love the two handed rods for smallmouth fishing between little falls and great falls as well as the tidal section. Scandinavian setups are great at low flows , but the Skagit is better when the river is up and getting deep is warranted The wading can tough in certain spots and sometimes the fish can be down deep. The two handed rod allows me the ability to cover a lot of water without moving around to much and cast sink tips and heavy flies. I also love the ability to experiment with various tips and heads . I agree that sometimes the practicality of a two hand rod isn't there, but if I wanted to be practical I would is a spin rod. I have definitely noticed that single hand fishing in the spots I like to go is a lot more physical.

I do go up to the great lakes for steelhead and will definitely use that too.   I also want to take it back home and use it on the Susquehanna for smallmouth.

Additonally, are there people around that can help me learn?  I saw scrolling back through the posts it looks like there are occasional get together for two handed casting.
