I'm looking for some help from the collective wisdom of the group-

I have a friend who wants to learn to fly fish (he's been a spinner his whole life). I'm thinking of teaching him the basic cast and taking him out on Saturday. Any suggestions on the best place to take him? We could try for shad if they're still out there. Maybe wading if the water level gets down far enough.

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Before taking him fishing, spend a little time in the grass introducing him to the basics of casting.

To be clear, "spend a little time in the grass" is slang for smoking pot.  That's an inside joke with Scott here on the message board if you don't know him too well yet.

I take novice clients to Four Mile Run. Look for easy wading, nothing to catch on the back cast, and lack of wind for starters, and fish that are not too difficult to catch. I always prefer casting on water over grass if possible. See my comments from the casting instructor thread a few weeks back.

I would take them somewhere they can fish with a floating line and ideally, a dry fly.  So not shad fishing, especially if you want to wade.

Any pond with bluegills, or if you're willing to drive, a high-gradient native brook trout stream requires only slightly more skill.

I like riverbend park (up near the gas pipeline right of way) for wading, but I'm worried that the water will still be too high on Saturday. Dependable perch bass and bluegill. Never tried 4MR. Is it still the 3.5 foot gauge height threshold for wading?
