Pay more attention to warm water hatches (or not, I dunno)

Hey -- I've never given it much thought (thinking is hard), but often when fishing in the local places I've seen fish taking very small insects at the surface at various times.  I've assumed that these are sunfish taking insects much like trout -- but I've never figured out exactly what insects they're taking, other than that they must be very small (like #22-28s).  Given the abundance of chironomids in most of the streams around here,  I figure that they have to be the culprit.

Anyone take much interest in "warm hatches" around here?  I might spend some time with the 3-weight, some 6X and a tin full of #22-26 midge pupa in the near future to try it out.

For some reason Todd's goldfish made me think about this.  I imagine some of the lunkers would feed more readily on these foods vs. the usual woolly buggers and blue poppers everyone throws (including me).

Actually, I've been out fishing when there are some pretty gigantic hatches going on -- just as much or more than you'd get at any trout stream around here.

Hi all, I'm new on the forum here, but have lived and fished here my whole life.  I have had times in late spring where I've come across big Mayfly-like hatches in some of the smaller side creeks of the river south of Alexandria. I threw on a Parachute Adams and had a blast in this one spot catching sunfish for about 10 minutes.  Eventually the fish either wizened up or dissipated, but it was still fun nonetheless.
