I broke my TICR and Temple Forks is nice enough to give me a credit to use towards a new rod since the TICR is no longer made, nor do they have blanks.  I am looking at the Axiom II and Axiom IIx rods.  I typically wouldn't buy a rod without casting it but that probably isn't an option here.  Anyone have thoughts on either of those two rods?

While I do not have funds from TFO to spend on a TFO rod, I am in a similar quandary between the AxiomII  and the BVK in an 8 wt for salt water and maybe some salmon fishing.

Thanks in advance.

I have a BVK in a 9 weight and like it a lot.  It really is a great rod but may not fit everyone's casting style.  Based on what I am reading I am between another BVK or the Axiom II-x rather than the Axiom II.

Are you talking about atlantic salmon on dries or great lakes chuck and duck type salmon fishing?  If the later I would definitely not recommend the BVK.

District Angling carries TFO rods. Have you given them a call? They might have one or the other of the two rods you can cast.

Why the Axiom IIX?

We carry:

  • BVK – We normally carry 4 thru 6-weights.  We don’t stock them higher than 6 due to rod scrim choice (hoop strength in the rods).  They’re great casting rods, but not the best lifting rods for big fish, and can tend to break.
  • Axiom II – We normally carry 7 thru 10-weights.  I have one 7, 9, & 10wt rod on sale due to us not carrying them going forward.  Nothing wrong with them - we just decided to go with the updated X rods.
  • Axiom II-X – We carry 6 thru 10-weights.  I only have 7-9 currently.

Thanks,

Honestly, just based off of reviews.  I will use it primarily for saltwater fishing and prefer faster rods for the salt and the 2x is said to be a bit faster.  Some reviews also suggested the axiom wasn't as accurate at longer distances.  I also saw some reviews comparing the axiom to the bvk and they preferred the bvk.  Its all based on someone elses casting though so you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I already have a bvk so was leaning towards getting something different for the sake of it.  If I hate it I can always sell it.

I was in DA this weekend but didn't want to ask about casting a rod I wasn't going to buy from them.
