Hello all,

To start, I have been trying to catch a snake-head for the better half of a year, with not one to show.  Therefore, with the spring months approaching, I plan to strengthen my search.

On that note,

on the interactive map there is a location called "snake-head pond"

can anyone backup this location?
is it really the end of Mattowomen creek, and does it truly hold an abundance of snake-head?

Second question

When is the earliest they can be caught.  I'm sure many of you know, they burrow in mud for the duration of the winter months.  But I cant find a definitive answer on when they begin feeding?

And finally, where are you favorite locations to target these spices?

Thank you all very much

As far as I can tell, they tend to wake up and hang out in the shallows around Chain Bridge about the same time the Shad run. However, I've never heard of them being caught then - only seen (or skewered with a pitchfork). After that, I think they disperse and begin feeding. I think you're best bet is to start targeting them ones the Shad run begins to taper off. But you should definitely make a trip to the VA side of Chain Bridge during the Shad run to see them coming up for air along the shoreline.

The ones that I have caught have come out of the back of the Occoquan River in April.  The combo seems to be warm day, in the middle of the day, and you will see them jumping around.  The strikes have seemed to be reactive strikes.  The shad run seems to be going on at the same time.  I have caught them on clowsers.

One other thing that I have noticed is that I have had a few bite offs on the strike.  It seems that the snakehead take bait from the tail first.  It is hard to feel the strike as they are swimming in the same direction as the fly is going.

I have heard that if you find them right after they spawn and the fry are swimming around you can get defensive strikes from the parents as they guard their young.  I haven't witnessed this.

I kayak to the rocky area of the river before it gets to the dam.  Basically as far as you can get to the back of the river.
