I have not seen much in her about Beaver Creek in MD for trout fishing. Any thoughts or recommendations?

Close, spring fed, and often pretty "technical." A secret favorite with a whole lot of us.

Hints:

Thanks to all the local TU chapters who put up the money, Casting for Recovery will stock the private portion on Thursday...pray those little stockies spread out upstream.

The swell parking on Beaver Creek Road has closed. You can park in a much smaller area on Beaver Creek Church Road, or in front of the fly shop.

Now, get in touch with James Harris who owns Beaver Creek Fly Shop and book a half-a-day which will be the best investment you can make in your local fly fishing scene.

(Moderator, hope that's not in violation of the No Commercialism rule...)

Thank you, great advice! What about Little Seneca Creek which is only about 30 miles from DC. It is designated a trout creek, but I've never heard anyone talk about trout inside of an hour of DC.

Thanks in advance.

Gary, I'll second getting in touch with James. If you fish up there, at least stop in the shop. He's put a ton of work into making that fishery what it is today and is extremely knowledgeable and helpful with info on the streams in that area.

As for trout within an hour of DC - the upper Patuxent River can be good in certain sections in the state park. Wild and stocked fish. Lots of hunters this time of year though. I haven't found it to be all that easy to fish but there are plenty of browns up there.

Gary,

Little Seneca is a Put and Take fishery.  As far as I know, trout don't hold over the summer.  You can look at the Maryland DNR website to see the stocking schedule, but they don't put a ton of fish in.

However, Little Seneca and Seneca creek are viable suburban smallmouth streams.  You might want to switch over to smallmouth fishing.  In water that might look like trout water in a colder environment, we usually have smallmouth.

I've spent many days on Beaver Creek MD.  As everyone else said, it's pretty technical - stream is probably 15-20 feet across at it's widest point combined with PLENTY of bank vegetation.  That said, if you can manage to keep a low profile and stay out of the water, there are a ton of really quality fish and most are wild (at least in the non-private sections).  In terms of quantity + quality, I don't think there is a better game in town.

If you decide to go up there, nymphing with scuds/cressbugs and pheasant tails has always produced for me.  Stay away from strike indicators if you can, the fish are pretty spooky.  Slightly tinted water a day after a decent rain is the best time to hit it.

That said, it's almost October so I'd bring the meat locker along as well and swing for the fences.

I fished ylthe Beav on Sunday and did well. But it really could use some rain. I'm not returning until it gets some.

FYI--that "lower parking area" is what's been closed.

I haven't been up there in several weeks, but the lower parking area where you walk adjacent to that farm where the guy waters stuff using old bleach bottles with little holes poked in them always holds fish.  If you walk up from the private "rope" across the stream to the pool where the spring seeps into the creek, there is a big rock you can stand on and highstick nymphs through a cut.  The last time we were there we had the whole lower stretch to ourselves and a #18 (any) nymph pulled out 5-6 fish back to back.

There's a long stretch of frog water between the rope and the 1st riffle that holds some really, really large trout.  Given the lack of flow and the brush on both banks, I've never figured out a good way to fish it.  That said, there are nearly always entire indicator rigs lining the trees.

I was in the area of Little Seneca Creek, so I thought I'd give it a try.  The good news is that I caught this little guy, but the bad news is that it was after two hours.  So the advice of LSC not being an epic trout stream is correct, but there are some in there.  In the first 10 mins I found a 2-3 foot hole under a tree trunk with good current.  On the first cast I got a nice hit, then nothing.  I could see 3-4 four little guys and 2 in the range of 12 inches.  I worked my way about half way to the dam with the theory that the water would be cooler and perhaps deeper.  I gave up after not seeing anything in the water and getting tangled a million times.  When I have time I'll try to make it all the way to the dam.  Has anyone else been up to the dam?  Ironically I caught this little guy back by my car just down stream of Clopper road.  Sure there are a million better places, but this place is only 25 mins from my house with no traffic.  I became inspired to give it a shot when I saw a youtube video of 10 year olds catching trout in this creek.
