Cancun

I thought I would see if anyone has any updated info about fly fishing in Cancun, or has any recommendations?

I will be there in March for a few days and will be looking to get out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you going to be in the hotel zone?  Will you have a car rental or will you be relying on cabs/pickup?

Richie, I'll be in the Hotel Zone, no wheels.  Not a whole lot of time but wanted to check the options.

I've fished Holbox for tarpon to the north and Punta Allen for permit to the south. Both are top-notch fisheries but not exactly easy to get to from where you will be. 

If all else fails, and you can't find anything DIY, try asking the lifeguards and sailing/SUP instructors along the beach hotels for advice. They'll speak English well and will appreciate una buena propina for pointing you in the right direction or even taking you out to the reef, themselves - which I've heard of at some of the high end resorts.

DIY in Cancun can be a tough sell.   The beaches on the ocean side always look amazing, but many of the hotels will string nets paralleling the beaches just to keep the urchins off the resorts so the gringos won’t step on them.  The lagoon on the western side of the Zona Hotelera has snook and baby tarpon in it, but you’ll need to find a place to rent SUPs or kayaks.  Oh yeah, there are crocs in there too, so beware.

 

Most people that are staying that far north in Cancun will take day trips to Isla Blanca, which is about 40 minutes away from the hotels.  Contact Kirk Seely at Cancun Fly Guides - fi...@cancunflyguides.com .   They’ll arrange to pick you up at the hotel, take you fishing, feed you, take pictures, and drop you back off.

 

If you want to travel further out and are a bit more adventurous, you have 2 options – Isla Holbox, and Cozumel, but you’re looking at renting a car (about $65 a week) or taking an Uber or cab each way, anywhere from an hour and a half or more.

Cozumel is a bit more than an hour and a half from Cancun, plus the ferry from Playa del Carmen and traffic getting there can be a real pain in the ass. I've spent a fair bit of time in Cozumel for work, and I can attest, fishing there can be a bit tricky but rewarding, and there are very very few people who fly fish the flats. The north end of the island and the east side of the island has *some* flats, there are guides that will take you but there can be a bit of wind, especially in the afternoon, you can also try wading for DIY action but, some areas are restricted during turtle activity or even private access, be sure to be aware of where you are, cops/wardens are generally good guys and if they give you trouble its more out of curiosity than anything else.


I've fished for bones, tarpon, and permit just south of playa at a place called Puerto Adventures, caught lots of Bones, didn't see tarpon or snook, but managed to get a 15lb Jack on a fly, that was worth the day.

My dad has fished Holbox, and at least from his stories it sounds like there are a lot of very very skiddish tarpon that were hard for him to reach, but, he's a not such a great caster.

Personally I give cancun a wide birth when I head to the yucatan, I land and GTFO to someplace like Cozumel or Tulum.
