Cedar Run- White Oak Canyon

Hi folks,

I'm relatively new to the area and this group. 

I'm hiking the Cedar Run- White Oak Canyon circuit in Shenandoah early on 7/12 and wondering whether it would be worth it to bring a rod along. I've read that the water will be low, especially on the Cedar Run side. Any tips on flies, fly-fishing the area, or just to enjoy the hike and wait until fall?

Either option would be good. I tried that area last summer and water levels were really low. However we've had no shortage of precipitation this year so it might be better. Situations like this or where a collapsible tenkara rod and a few flies really shines, it is no big decision or commitment to carry it.
As for flies those brookies are not usually picky so this time of year I'd bring a few that float really well in sizes 14-18 (eg, ants, foam beetles, parachute mayflies, caddis, royal wulff, or Mr.Rapidan) and a few standard type nymphs is never a bad idea. Call Murray's Fly Shop and ask about conditions and recommendations they'll steer you right. Good luck. Matt

There r fish in there. As it warms up people swim there. I wouldn't fish it this late just because swimmers are annoying and rude generally. But early in season it's fun for Brookes.

My wife and I fished and hiked up the Cedar Run side in the drizzle two Saturdays ago. The water levels didn't seem too low.  We got there around 10 am and caught four eager little Brookies (<8") with a royal wulff in just under 2.5 hours, fishing at a leisurely pace and sharing my 4wt rod. It seemed like the larger of the small pools all held fish. There were plenty of hikers and swimmers heading further up Cedar Run, but nobody disturbing the pools we targeted closer to the parking lot. 

We talked to two fly fisherman in the parking lot that had fished White Oak with no luck- too many swimmers and dogs, even on a cooler rainy day. But, I've heard that there are less swimmers if you access White Oak from Skyline drive. 

No matter what, I think you would be smart to get there early and avoid the weekend rush. I would focus on enjoying the hike and keeping an eye out for fishy spots on the way.

Well, that's one of the best hikes in the park, so your starting off on the right foot.  If you don't mind bushwacking, I'd focus on the areas between the upper and lower falls.  The trail swings away from the run, and it's pretty rough moving, which of course means there's less pressure.  And there is some good holding water in there.  I've also seen a bunch of brookies up above the upper falls, higher than I thought it made sense.  So basically just keep your eye out.  I've had better luck (and worse hiking) on other runs in the area.
