Hey is anyone interested in backpacking somewhere into Shenandoah for some trout fishing? I was thinking of going Saturday April fifth, but I am open to go most weekends. I have some streams in mind but I'm definitely open to input. (I was thinking white oak, rose, or rapidan.)

Also, If overnighting is too much then maybe a day trip. I just like the idea of having a fishing buddy up there for x number of reasons.

It may be a good idea to meet up before hand- for both logistics and safety so feel free to email me or give me a buzz.

Thanks

Justin

If you do white oak, I highly suggest going before it turns to swim-able weather. I was up there last year and these 4 high school girls in bikinis just jumped it and didn't even seem to realize I was fishing and had sharp hooks.

Dan, that's why i always bring along some bartles & james....

slightly more serious... without recommending particular streams, the way i approach this is looking up local/regional backpacking websites for treks. usually they include pretty good info/maps/pics of views/streams/campsites. then pull the topo maps for a better overview and also check out flickr for additional photos of the area/stream. general rule is if there's a decent flow and it's either in the park or protected land, you're going to find a fishable population of wild trout. only real exception to this i can think of within 3.5 hrs is dolly sods, where the acidity has killed off most wild fish.

Wish i could go, spring fishing should be in full swing by then...  good luck!

I'm brand new to fly fishing, but I'm down for tagging along with someone more experience to learn.

Don't want to dampen your spirits, but will the fish be awake yet given this long cold winter?

Jeremy's Run is a well known stream but since you have to hike a while to get to it, it doesn't get as much pressure.  It can be great in spring when the water's up higher,  but I normally fish it a bit later to give the water time to warm up.  I'm assuming many of the tribs are dumping in near freezing water right now.

There's a couple other places I go, but not normally until the first week in May, and since I moved to MD its a bit more of a drive.

It's not too cold. Fish while the water is high. I was out last weekend in that vicinity, and caught fish all day on dries and bigger ones on the dropper.

Definitely not too cold. I've caught brookies in SNP on dry flies in January and February the past couple winters, on warmer days. This week should be good!

I always wondered about Dolly Sods -- we have friends who backpack there ALL the time and said there's a stream, but I didn't know if it was fishable.

You might try hitting the streams closer to the headwaters along Skyline -- I've had at least one good trip immediately following a hard rain and posted a report about it last fall.  We just purchased the 1-year pass for the park, so I'm planning on living along the SNP this season and really getting some time in on those streams.  I figure if I have a heart attack, at least I'm in a place where there's no chance of quick medical attention!

Actually, there's an inverse relationship between reasonable access to a defibrillator and good fishing.  On the upper St. Mary's, I imagine I'd just want Beth to roll me into the woods a bit.
