Looking into getting a two-handed fly rod. Tend to fish most often on the Patuxent River, but would ideally like something that could be rigged to work on trout streams inland. Can anyone recommend what weight rod would be best, or any particular brands/models they happen to like? Total novice, grateful for the help!

I have never fished the patuxent, but if I was looking for a two handed rod for inland fishing, I would look at something like in the 4 or 5 weight range, probably something in 11 or 11 and a half feet.  I believe some companies are even producing 3 wt two handers.  Depends on where you would fish it.  Other than maybe the north branch of the potomac, I am struggling to think of somewhere in the virgina/md area where a two hander would really be practical for trout fishing.

For mid-priced two handers that offer great value, I like the Echo TR line and the Beulah Platinum series.  Believe both make rods in the 11-12 foot and 4-5 weight range.  If you want to drop some cash you could get a meiser.  All depends on your budget.

You could fish Dry River with a 2-hander for trout, although a 3-weight is heaviest rod I'd use there.

Depends, do you mean the lower Patuxent in the Tidal water for Stripers and such, or the upper Patuxent for Trout?  I took your original question to mean the lower.

I fish the Jackson with a 2 handed 8.  Its a little over kill for the fish, but it makes toss sinking line and articulated bugs easy.

I'm in the Tidal Patuxent near Hollywood, so it's more for Stripers and the like than trout.

Keith,

If you want a good two handed rod, not a smaller switch, I would look at a  12'6' 6 wt  or 13' 7wt. You can use it for a lot of different situations for smallies  shad, stripers, to steelhead. Lots of rod options, I would look at Orvis, Echo, Redington and TFO.

Never fished the water you note, but in the last few years many companies have begun producing trouters (e.g. 10' - 11' 3, 4 and 5wt rods).  Bob Meiser sells everything from a 10'6 3/4wt (which I have and is a blast to cast) to a 12'6 3-5wt on the lower end of grain weight.  Also, Winston came out with micro spey (10'6 3wt, 11' 4wt and 11'6 5wt) last year I think.

The smallest Beulah goes is 10' 5wt on their Platinum switch if memory serves.

Most of these rods would work for decent sized trout as well as bass, bluegills, etc. on up to fish in the 6-8lb range.
