Has anyone heard if the first shad has been caught yet in Potomac?  How is the water temp and flow?

The gauge above Fletcher's is here: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/md/nwis/uv/?site_no=01646500&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,62615,62620

Currently the flow is 12000cfs and the gauge height is 4.17ft. Unfortunately water temp isn't listed on there.

Here's the same gauge, including temperature:

Current water temp is 41 degrees and falling....

Yikes! Guessing the run won't be early run this year...forecast for the next week is pretty chilly.

What do gage height and temp need to be for first shad?  is it below 4ft and moving toward 50 degrees?

I don't think gauge height matters as much for the Shad, that's really more of an indicator of how "safe" the river is (answer: it's never safe). But I believe that if the gauge is over 5 feet, Fletcher's won't rent boats.

And yes, the 50 degree mark is usually when the shad start to appear.

I heard one report they are just starting to show up in Richmond, if true, they shouldn't be too far away in Fredericksburg.  I haven't checked the water temps, but I'm guessing it still needs to warm up quite a bit.

What is the best way to fish for shad in the Potomac.  I just moved here from NC.

Go to Fletcher's, rent a boat. They are like $30 for the day or you can get a season pass for like $250. You can catch them from shore around Fletcher's but a boat is much easier. Other than that, use a 6-8 weight rod with a full sinking like. I use a 300gr line.

"Best way" is relative.  I agree that from a boat is probably best, however, having never done that I've caught all I can handle using an 8wt and a type 4 sinking shooting taper from the MD/DC side, usually below Chain Bridge.  A boat allows better positioning relative to shore but if you're willing to move around you'll do fine (and see lots of deer and other critters).  Best if you can make it out during the week.  Sometimes you'll find shad in a current seam and the anglers above/below won't catch near as many, and of course the reverse is true.  The key is to just get out there, and be willing to change flies, retrieves, depth, etc. until something works.  The fly and lure angers I've met over the years have been very helpful.  I'm back overseas now and will miss this year's run...

Puppydrum,

I'm going to be at the beer tie monday. Would like to meet you and hook up to go after some shad on the Potomac as you described. There's a burger and beer in it for you if you like... :-)

I'll be meeting then with those interested in fishing the Jackson in April as well..

Water's too cold all around ... I know this is primarily about the Shad run but the Stripers will be showing up right after the Shad start but my favorite place to fish is very close to the mouth of the river and the temp there was only 43 and falling ...
I heard that it might even snow tonight or tomorrow, I think we can forget about an early run this year. Last year the river seemed high, fast and muddy every time I had a chance to get out, so I was really looking forward to this year,  I hope it doesn't repeat this year!

MikeV,

Appreciate the invitation but I'm working in Egypt at the moment, thus won't be stateside until June at the earliest.  I'll live this year's shad run through all of you...
