Holmes Run Macro Invertebrate Survey

Spent some time this morning on Holmes below Barcroft. Water is clear and cold. Other than some midges and small crane flies coming off there wasn't much action in the air. Sounded like a deer got taken down too.

In the past year since the chlorinated water spill I have only found caddis in the water. I spent several hours out in July and did not see a single cressbug or scud.

Today was different. Some rocks had over a dozen cress bugs underneath. Small pools had them walking around mixed in with scuds. I grabbed a plastic bottle off the shore and started collecting. Loads of caddis too. Picked up a few clams.

This video shows them after placing in my aquarium. The mosquito fish better lay off the cress bugs or it's going to get relegated to the creek.

I wasn't fishing. I was with someone that lost two trout. Wormie and chartreuse bugger.

Awesome critters Rob -- I'm firmly in the 1-2% of the message board who actually give a rat's a__ about that sort of thing.  You can learn a lot about nature by observing it directly.   

The other day at 4MR I was getting bass following my soft hackle all the way back to where I was standing, which generally results in the fish spooking suddenly (either due to the sudden appearance of a large, gangly hominid standing there like an idiot or the realization that the fish is now quite far from its previous cover).  Even when I ran out of line to twitch, I could jiggle the rod tip and get takes, requiring a roll cast hookset.  That's a fun one.  Kind of like when a brook trout decides to take the fly *right as it drifts over the lip into the next pool. 

Animal behavior man -- nothing else in the world is really interesting....period, and those who can't appreciate it will die lonely and miserable.

I care TurbinBlade, I care..  Rob what species of Caddis did you find? There are tiny Baetis in there too. Very spastic little guys and TINY.  But they are there.

Spastic was a poor word choice. I'm sure you see them, they just move in quick sporadic movements. Anyway, I know there in the Potomac tribs from stream monitoring with the state. We found net spinning caddis too. And of course all the low sensitive organisms like midges and aquatic worms.
