Here is a good read for the saltwater anglers on here.

It's been fairly obvious the past 5 years that they fishery is not doing well. Hopefully something changes.

Thanks for sharing! This has been an issue that I’ve been researching a lot lately having noticed a significant downturn in fishing success mostly along the jersey shore. A lot needs to change to save the striped bass population. Catch and release (or a self imposed slot limited) needs to be adopted by all and especially the charter captains, the individuals responsible for setting regulations need to take a hard look at the current regs and stand up to lobbying to do what’s best for the species, and lastly the coastal states need to slow their role in habitat distruction (aka beach replenishment) which has destroyed vital baitfish habitats inshore. I recommend spreading the word if you enjoy catching striped bass or want to fish for them in the near future!

I encourage everyone to also read this article written on Fissues.

Furthermore, S. 1520 The Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2018 passed the House last night and is now heading to Trump to be signed into law.

However, this does not address the issue of NOAA issuing an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to open the EEZ to striped bass fishing.

Happy we are talking about this!

I'm confused by the article, are they making 2019 regulations based on data that only extends to 2016?

Thanks for sharing these two articles. Please note that anyone can comment on proposed rule making. If any member of this forum is passionate about these fisheries, please consider taking the time to write a public comment on any proposed federal or state rule making.

I saw the talk of them wanting to open up the EEZ to striper. That's the one area where there are an absolute ton of (protected) fish. Seems insane to me that they'd want to let those get harvested given how well we were able to deplete the lower bay.

I have always hoped they would manage them like they do red drum. For those unaware, Red Drum have a slot and anything overslot has to be released which keeps the adult spawning population intact.

Fishing for red drum the past few years has been absurdly good with 10+ fish over 40 pounds in a night being considered a normal night during peak run. Could you imagine if the Striped Bass got protection like that?

It's my understanding the extreme harvesting of baitfish, such as menhayden , is impacting striper migration. They will follow the food.
