Has anyone seen reports on the shad migration on the Rappahannock near Fredericksburg and if it is viable for fishing now?

As of 2 weeks ago, shad are there and parking lots were open, but it was really crowded.

Looking at the USGS website today the river went from 2.5 ft to 7.5 ft today.   But before that they were starting to get active.  Generally not safe above about 3.5 ft for wading.

Just checked and the Water level was up to about 8.5 ft and rising.

In regards to the Falmouth Flats side of the Rappahanock.  That park is closed to the general public.  You need to get a pass from the Stafford Parks and Rec to use the park.    Fishing only is allowed and the cost is $10 for Stafford Count Residents and $20 fornon-residents.  Old Mill Park is open to the public and has restrooms.

Thanks to all for the feedback and guidance.  I will let the waters subside and give it a try later in the week or next week.  Will report back.  Gregg

While you are patiently waiting for the waters to drop, I'll bet the shad are, too!

Here is my current bedtime reading, in case you haven't seen it: https://www.amazon.com/Founding-Fish-John-McPhee/dp/0374528837. He's no Tom McGuane, but there is a lot of information about mid-Atlantic shad runs.

Best,
Owen

On the Rappahannock this morning. Overcast and rainy off and on. The Shad fishing was on fire hitting white and most other Shad darts rather close to the surface. Birds of prey were doing their job. Kind of awesome to see an eagle carry one off into the sky.

Sun came out strong around noon and it turned off like a light switch.. Many folks left. Those that stayed went down deeper with silvery white colors that were almost as productive as earlier. Most numbers were equivalent to really bad golfers playing 18 holes.
