I've been invited to attend a picnic that will be held at the Bluemont Park picnic shelter.

When I google-mapped the location I found that it is on Four Mile Run creek between Wilson Blvd and Arlington Blvd (HWY 50).

Since I'm going to be there anyway I'm thinking about bringing along a 3wt and see if there are any bluegills in there.

Anyone ever fished that section?

Thanks,
Jim

I used to live over there, and I think that stretch is part of the family fishing day event when they start stocking. I can’t remember for sure, but I’d say there’s a good chance of something.

Skinny water. Not much there. Per my usual river charms I pulled out a brand new razor scooter from the creek last weekend.

I live very close to this stretch of 4MR. Between exercise runs and endless walks with the stroller during the early months of fatherhood, I've probably walked/scanned this strech of 4MR 200 times.

Unfortunately the stretch around Bluemont up to Wilson Blvd is pretty shallow and I have never seen anything with fins besides a handful of small bluegill that hang out under Carlin Springs and sometimes under Wilson Blvd.

Not that it is worth the walk down further, but I usually see a few more BG's further down by the playground near the Glenncarlyn dog park (the foot bridge).

Further down where S Arlington Mill DR stops running parallel along the creek there are also a few deep pools which will also probably have a few BG's. There is also a small "natural area" pond along the bike path there with lots of goldfish and small BG's in it.

Don’t bother.  Enjoy the day with family.  It’s not worth your time.

I used to live on Kenilworth, a few blocks from the park.  Local TU used to put 800+ trout in the creek early in the year for the kids day.  Kids only  were supposed to fish from 10am-noon, and families afterwards.  They’d put the fish in the Friday night before and come Saturday morning most of the fish were already poached out.  It’s pathetic.  I’ve seen guys with dip nets, cast nets, and heavy saltwater gear fishing.  Even heard that a portion of the net from the tennis courts across the trail was cut one year and used as a seine to haul out fish.

The other issues with 4MR up there is the fact that it gets a lot of street water runoff.  Chemicals aside, the pavement gets so hot that as soon as it rains and washes into the creek, every trout left dies when the temperature spikes.

Don’t eat heavy at the picnic.  When you’re done go to Wilson by George Mason Drive to Pupatella and get the best pizza in the Washington DC area.  Pray they have the Fig & Pig pie.

Many thanks for the quick replies. Will most likely pass up the fishing opportunity and concentrate on friends and family.

Cheers,
Jim

Jim,

My vote is to bring the 3wt. Maybe I am a Bluegill enthusiast or maybe I am just way into urban angling, but I just fished the section of 4mr downstream from the disc gold course on Sunday. If you like sight fishing to grabby little Sunfish, it’s a great way to kill 30 minutes and test some of your casting skills while keeping your feet dry. The colors on these fish are gorgeous as well!

Trent,

Sold! I love catching bluegills! I'll toss some gear in the trunk and do some fishing when no one is looking.

Cheers,
Jim

Looks like bluegill are holding on circular redds in pools. I saw fish holding in the pool beneath dog park bridge, and low concrete bridge south of 50, near Long Branch Nature Center. First time I've noticed fish there in 10+ years so I wonder what makes it more amenable this year.

Bluegill (actually I've mostly seen redbreast sunfish) are on beds all over the place where I like to go on the Potomac right now.  I try to avoid them by foot as best as possible, though casting to structure at the same loci during this time of year can reveal what many consider to be a more desirable species --

After griping about nary catching a bass in 2015, I seem to be getting into a lot more this year for whatever reason.  They're kind of fun --

Last year it felt like I couldn't buy one!

Gene,

We had a monster lmb snap an 8lb tippet today. Largest bass any client has ever hooked. And it ate the damsel. Fish took the entire tandem rig.

I second the Pupatella. Too bad it wasn't there 15 years ago when we lived in that hood.

I agree its been a good year so far on bass. My largest LMB on fly so far from near Mason Neck on a SF blend rattle minnow.
