That's awesome! I'm guessing this doesn't include down in Georgetown, though.

Saw a photo of water in the canal below fletchers. And it looks like they have completed the work on the locks in Georgetown. But it might all be an April Fools trick.

Nothing would make me happier than the chance to do mulberries for carp again!

mulberries for carp, HORRAY HORRAY!!! Still is some decent carp fishing to be had in the canal where water exists, can't imagine how much better it will be once it starts ripping again.....perhaps we should organize a carp caucus?

Probably best to check with the C&O Canal Trust rather than NPS.

I go down to Georgetown everyday and walk along the canal to get to where I'm going and I saw there was flow in the canal water on Tuesday which I haven't seen in a while which should mean the water is coming back.

I poked around the canal today around lock 5. I spotted two sizable carp, some catfish, and a few bass. I brought my rod but didn’t get any bites. It’s a bit tricky fishing because the water is pretty low and a lot of the big plants that began growing close to the path with the water gone are now decaying. There were a few small bass I contemplated casting to but decided not too because they’d just get caught in all the muck and it wasn’t worth it.

But nice to see this spot coming back! When I first started learning fly fishing, this was my no. 1 location because it was bikable

I hit up the canal while waiting for a boat for shad today. Conditions are incredible between Fletcher's and Georgetown. Tons of feeding fish with skinny, clear water. Current is much stronger than usual, so it can be hard to get the right drift sometimes with all the plants around. Not sure what it's like closer to Georgetown, but the first mile south of Fletcher's is worth checking out.

On my way to District Angling yesterday it appeared that the canal has ample water up around Chain Bridge and I assume for a few miles farther up. Has anyone seen if there's water in the canal up a Anglers near Great Falls and Widewater?

I was running the towpath from Georgetown to Fletchers last week and noticed a TON of carp through the section just west of Georgetown, probably a few dozen fish. Looking good already!

Bright stonefly nymphs (think steelhead hammer or whatever) have worked well for me. Drop them infront of resting or cruising fish and they will usually give it a taste.

Folks may call me crazy but in the vicinity of Chain Bridge I saw what looked like a two and a half foot Muskie or pike cruising in the canal. I was watching a largemouth guard its spawning bed when all of the sudden a really long fish swam out of the murk for a couple seconds before disappearing again. I was right on top of it. Definitely wasn’t a snakehead and I don’t think it was a gar because I didn’t see a long narrow nose. It also was darker and fatter than the pics of gars caught locally that I’ve seen. It happened fast, though. I tried to cast in the direction it went but nothing was biting. Whatever it was, if someone hooks it they’ll be in for a surprise.

OK, what makes in not a snakehead.  They look an awful lot like Muskie when you're looking down on them.  And that section of the canal is known to be infested with Snakehead.

Also, could it have been some sort of catfish?  Traditionally there have been channel cat's, but with flathead catfish in the river, could it have been one of them?  At that size, it limits the choices.  Catfish, Carp, Snakehead, or one monster Bass or Walleye.  However, if it swam out of the murk, that really only leaves one of the first 3 as ones that will hang out and live in the muddy water.  If a Walleye washed into the canal, it would try to get out again fast.

Has anyone heard of Bowfin in this area?

However, the canal is connected to the Potomac and who knows what could be in there at any given time.  It could be a striped bass or even Chessie.

I know it sounds like I'm saying I saw a UFO, but it didn't look like a carp, catfish, walleye, or snakehead to me, and I was less than 5-7 feet away. I've seen a ton of catfish, carp and snakehead in there when it had water. I've been comparing pictures and watching as many "fish cruising" videos as I can find online, and it honestly moved just like this, which is why my immediate reaction was, "WTF, that looks like a musky" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgSouRXix4o

I wouldn't be surprised to see a muskie make its way in there. The river (and canal) is like a box of chocolates. When the TPFR member posted a purple tilapia from 4MR with a popper in its mouth I stopped second guessing strange fish being out of place in this system.

Well we missed the Georgetown Mulberry hatch this year but, looks like all the lock work is complete:
