I have been tossing around the idea of going steelhead fishing this fall/winter and was wondering if any know any goo guides in the PA/Oh areas that they would recommend. I have never been before and feel it is a shame since we are not that far away from steelhead alley. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you are open to new york I would give vince tobia (cattaragus creek outfitters a call). He has private water on the catt that his guests get to fish.

If you are not aware, the erie tribs can be rather crowded (especially PA).

I would give Don Mathews with the fishing fool a call. Real nice guy with lots of options foshing the Erie tribs. IMO you are better off in Ohio than PA as far as crowds and options.

Good luck.

It is great fun.  I've gotten into these last few years a lot.  A guide in PA is not needed, pretty simple to figure out.  I have not fished OH.  NY is in my opinion the best state, certain streams get a lot of fall brown trout, fall steelies, and spring steelies.  I am hoping to get up there a few weekends this fall, feel free to shoot me an email to email outside of this string.  Only stream I've fished where a guide was essential was the salmon.

Next beer tie I have planned steelhead eggs and other similar patterns. If anyone needs to stock up for their first trip these are proven patterns. #avalancheburger

Honestly, a guide isn't needed anywhere along the lake erie/lake ontario tribs if you do your research and have an idea of where to go based on conditions.  The fishing itself is simple as you mentioned.

I have had several good trips with Reel Action Fly Fishing Guides on some of the Erie Tribs in N.Y. I assume they also cover PA and OH.

You didn’t clarify…

He has private water on the upper Catt immediately above the Gorge and his guests get to fish, but have to hire his guide.

Yes but if he is looking for a guide anyway, the option of having private water on what can be a crowded stream is a nice option.

you will have a great time, and most of the crowds should be gone.

I am a big fan of Greg Senyo and the folks at Steelhead Alley Outfitters... John Miller is one of the best guides I have used and he works with them in the Steelhead season and with the folks at West Branch Angler on the West Branch of the Delaware in the summer.

I think Greg's email is still gregsenyo (at) yahoo.com
