Forum Friends,

Headed to AK on a last minute RV trip w/family. We will be traveling around the Kenai from Aug 2nd-11th. Planning to do an all-day drift with Troutfitters on the Upper/Middle Kenai for rainbow and dolly varden. Might plan to do a hike-in with them as well on the Russian River or Quarts Creek for salmon. The rest of time I will likely self-guide. Any advice on roadside angling, self-guiding this area, or any other thoughts would be beneficial.

Also, looking for recommendations for 7/8 fly reel under $100 w/ solid drag to go with a 7 wt. rod I borrowed from my father-in-law. Wish I had more $ to invest but that’s just where I'm at. Have been looking at Lamson Liquid 3.5, Ross Eddy and Redington Behemoth. Would appreciate any advice!

Cheers,

Phil

Quartz creek is a good stream for dollies and possibly rainbows. I would not fish it for salmon though. For one, it is not a large stream and two, the fish aren't particularly fresh by the time the get up there. There is a small feeder called crescent creek that has good fishing for dollies in the lower stretches and grayling as you work upstream.

Depending on the time of year, some of the streams down towards home can have interesting fishing. Deep Creek in particular can have good fishing for silvers.

The kenai itself has plenty of Wade diy fishing.

As far as a reel, see if you can find a lamson guru online. I don't think I spent much more than that on mine and they threw in a line.

Thanks for the advice. I am adding Crescent Creek Campground to my trip plan. Your the second person to recommend Crescent but there wasn't a lot of info online about it. Also, we have already planned to go to Ninilchik for a packrafting trip, so I will be sure to check out Deep Creek. Hopefully, the Silvers are running.

I fished the Kenai two years ago and it is worth noting there are a significant number of regulations. The Alaska Fish and Game posts a number of helpful maps/pdfs that include riverbank closures.

Good luck!

Okuma makes nice reels in this category.

I'm not sure of the current models but the slv and integrity were nice models a few years ago.

+1 on the LLBean Streamlight reels. Mine has handled steelhead and bonefish with no complaints.
