I have never had this site at my disposal, so I was never able to asked truly educated fly fisherman this question. Okay, so I am heading up to PA to visit family tonight, and will be there for around five days.  Near my house is a small pond, that somehow never freezes.  In that pond ( private so I know they are still there ), are two grass carp that are easily four feet long.  I see them every-time I bass fish this pond.  I have tried everything I could think of to catch them, with no luck.  keep in mind these are GRASS carp, not regular carp.  I have tried bead head nymphs, regular nymphs, midges, minnows, dry fly's, creature baits, and just about every other thing I own.  Of coarse I realize that they are grass eating carp, so I was just trying these baits to try them.  I tied a fly with 3 pieces of grass on it haha. I tied a fly with a little piece of moss I found, and nothing.  so I switched to corn, and bread. nothing.  I have been trying to catch these two fish for well over a year and absolutely cannot.

If anyone has ANY knowledge of catching "grass" carp. please. please help me out I need to land one of these monsters.

Thanks alot

Tyler, do a quick search on this board. I did a post on these a few months ago. I chatted with a few experts out at Mossy Creek. Basically, unless they are feeding on the surface, you're probably not going to have a shot at them. If they are on top, toss a small beetle, popper, etc. The grass should work if someone is mowing the lawn and spraying grass clippings into the water.

Many moons ago (ie over 10) my dad and I were fishing a local golf course pond. (Close by. And like to go after dinner). We typically caught bluegill and smallies. Dad was fishing a chartreuse popper and caught a grass eating carp on a 5 or 6 wt. after fighting it for an hour he finally gave up and cut the line in fear of snapping the rod.

If you finally catch it be prepared for a battle!

Sorry no advice but that memory will always stick with me.
Good luck

Acc. to the Orvis Guide to Carp Fishing, which I picked up at one of TPFR's Beet Tie raffles, grass carp are bitchin' difficult to catch. I just know that this is exactly what you want to hear. ;-)

I caught one about six years ago on Claytor Lake outside of Christiansburg, VA. I hooked him on a fly made of green estaz, a green zonker strip, and a small piece of green foam. It was basically all tied on the shank at two points, sort of San Juan worm style. I'd seen them feeding on lake crud around the docks for weeks and I told my buddy I needed a "grass fly" and that's what he came up with. Once I saw them, I just dead drifted it and waited.

Also, by caught, I really mean hooked into, freaked out, and got cut off on dock piling. Lasted all of about 3 seconds.
