Presque Isle Smallmouth Bass

Hey All,

              Considering going to Presque Isle Pennsylvania sometime this Spring targeting Smallmouth Bass.

I've been doing some research on when is the best time to go. And have been getting conflicting information.

Does anyone have any experience fishing for Smallmouth Bass in Pressure Isle ?

Any advice when is the best to go ?

Vladimir- the smallmouth are in shallow as part of their spawning behavior, so dates tend to be related to water temp. (although moon phase probably has something to do with it too). I've fished smallies in PIB and the Erie tribs (they run up the creeks like steelhead) from late April through mid May. The bay is usually earlier than the tribs, but it can depend. If you fish them in the tributary creeks YOU MUST, BY LAW, not target spawning fish on their beds. These fish are out of season at this time, and targeting a spawning fish out of season is against the law in PA. You can catch them lawfully, just not on their spawning beds.

Wooly Buggers and other streamers, with a gurgler or 2 is all you need.

               Thank you for your email about Presque Isle. And also thank you for the link to the article in Drake magazine. I do not have a subscription to Drake. Although have a substantial collection of fly fishing and fly tying magazines.

I'm thinking of tentatively heading up to Presque Isle towards the end of April.

Good luck! In my experience, there will almost definitely be fish in the bay by then (be aware of cold fronts that will move fish out of the shallows). Look for SW (warm) winds and fish areas where the wind has pushed warmer water (and bait) into the shallows.
