It looks like it is going to be pretty nice this weekend and I am itching to get out and fish.  Does anyone have any ideas within an hour or so of DC? I don't think I'll have all day, but I would like to get out for a couple of hours during the warmth of the day on either Saturday or Sunday.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Saturday looks to be the best now. I was thinking of either Accotink or Holmes Run. MIght be some hold overs from the fall stocking.

If anyone goes this weekend, I'd love to hear if there are any fish left.  They way they get poached at Holmes I've been too pessimistic to check it out myself.

I was considering Accotink or Holmes Run, but I wasn't sure how many fish will have persisted since the VDFG stocked the streams in October.  Does anyone have any experience with Four Mile Run in the winter? I thought I might try to hit up the warm water output during low tide.

I was going to check out Accotink as well. Moved much closer to the creek, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

Looking at the schedule, looks like Passage Creek in GWNF was just stocked. Although that is a bit further of a drive.

I've been fishing on 4 Mile Run when I can get out of work (or if its a little warmer, on the weekends).  Good amount of pressure from spin anglers, but I've seen them mostly by the subway/US 1 bridges to the east.  I've seen two other fly fishermen the two times I've gone.

I had a nice day where I caught 8 bluegill off a Chernobyl ant, and another day I caught 2 large-mouth bass off a Wooley Bugger.  If you see me out there, I'm the new guy who has casting problems, but I'm doing my best to work through them!

I might be out there Saturday, but I'm also learning to the Accotink (I haven't been there yet, so it'd be fun to scout it out).  I've been to Holmes Run, but I went earlier in the winter and haven't been back.

Ive been to holmes run a few times in the last few weeks. I have gotten 2 or 3 takes, but that is it. That area is heavily poached, but there are one or 2 left in the first pool after the damn and maybe one or two in some other places in the creek. Rumor is that there is a nice sized brown hanging out in the pool between the first and second stream crossing, but I have never seen it.

Also heard the rumor that there MAY be a sticking of Holmes Run and Accotink in the near future, although I dont know how reliable that info is. Good luck!

I haven't been this year, but last year, they stocked Holmes all winter.  The downside is most of the fish seem to be missing their fins which is both a sad reminder of their lives as stockers, but also a limit to their ability to put up a fight.  It IS however a great place to practice casting as there is a lot of open space, but also some great tighter spaces for precision casting. I'd highly recommend putting and hour to hour and a half in the car and trying some wild or native trout nearby, but in a pinch Holmes and Accotink can be quite fun.

PS if you happen to be there and see wet tire tracks from the stocking truck, wait a week and come back.  The recent stockers will only take a fly if its a food pellet imitation.

One of these days I will get further out and explore the water, but for now I agree Holmes and Accotink can be fun. And it is good for casting practice. All of the fish I have brought to net have had healthy fins, so thats a good sign.

Also the more of us that are there, the harder it is for people to poach as much.

That's great to hear.  I'm attaching a photo of what pretty much everything looked like last year.  That's also a great point on the poaching.  Harder to do it with more eyes on you.

I'll prob head over to Holmes for more aquarium critters. You'd be surprised how much lives in there.

4MR was really tore-up last time I was there, making it even less scenic if you can believe it.  I'm sure the intention is to improve the structure along the banks (I remember the plan being posted here a few years ago), but it had to be said that just about anything resembling structure along the north bank is completely destroyed, and there were huge tarps installed along a lot of the stream (obviously to prevent erosion from the construction).

The usual suspects are still right at the outfall (small LMB, sunfish, school of gizzard shad) but i wouldn't call it an ideal place to fish at the moment.

Rob, Other than the negative connotation that comes with the name and the mud label, why do folks hate them so much?  they put a nice bend in the rod, but I don't know much about them from an environmental standpoint.  Do they have a negative impact on the ecosystem?  Too many of them? No predators?  Too competitive?  I'd love to learn more about them.

Gizzard shad are widely introduced as "forage" but often become so numerous that they are implicated in various detrimental effects to waters (e.g., removing food and/or using resources that would have otherwise been used by something else).  I guess that's the same story with a lot of things.

The only bend they put in my rod is by accidental snaggery.

Rob hates them because he thinks they're slimy and stinky.  They actually are a bit nasty, but I liked the scales they left on the grip of my ugly stick when I used to cast net them for catfish back in MO.

gotcha.  I suppose I never really noticed as the two I have caught came at the end of the day and my stripping guards already carried a righteous smell.  I'll have to pay more attention this year

Thanks for all the advice.  Of course I was laid up last weekend, but this weekend looks like the weather this weekend looks like it is going to be even better, so I will endeavor to get on a river somewhere.

I do appreciate the discussion about gizzard shad and needlefish.  I didn't realize that the Jawa of fish smelled so bad.  I'll do my best to avoid catching them this weekend.

Is there any evidence out there to prove that fish fin cannibalism is a symptom of hatchery life? I was under that impression until my lovely girlfriend brought this unfortunate looking rainbow to the net on the Mighty 'Mo in Montana last summer. As many of you probably know, Montana stopped stocking its rivers in 1974 so there is a slim-to-none chance that this fish has ever been in any sort of enclosure with other fish.

Sorry, didn't meant to double post.

I suspect that type of fin/body damage is more a result of general conditions present during hatchery rearing than from "cannibalism", per se.  Ich, fungal infections, bacterial/protozoan, direct damage from conspecifics, poor water quality, stress, you name it -- hatcheries have it.

Most hatcheries have "labs" (or a room that serves as one) stocked with various meds (copper, etc.) and with diagnostic equipment for the purpose.
