Went to the Rapidan on Saturday and hiked up until I started to see pretty pools. I only saw a couple other anglers so it was a nice secluded day to be out. Nymphing proved productive...I caught a couple handfuls of fingerling smallies and something else I wasn't sure about (maybe a sucker?). Also a decent smallie on a streamer.

Most importantly...caught my first ever brook trout on the fly (and then a couple more after). My dad and I started fly fishing last fall and it was a pretty miserable winter to get hooked on fly fishing...but finally I accomplished my goal of catching a trout on my own. Those fish are absolutely gorgeous and magical. Makes me proud to be a Virginian!

Also had a great time shad fishing on Friday at Chain Bridge. Also my first shad ever. All around great weekend! And saw a decapitated catfish...looked at least 40 lbs. See below.

Nice variety of fish!  That unidentified fish is a Bluehead Chub.

Khalil and I went out to the Rapidan yesterday and had a great day. A good number of brookies, including my biggest ever, and one that Khalil alllllmmmost landed, which he swears was 14" long and fat like fat Elvis. I didn't see it, but I have no reason to doubt him. Little fish were on midges and caddis patterns, the bigger fish on nymphs and buggers.

As fun as it was, it was also a beat down. There were three distinct slips where I was sure I broke my Superfine, but somehow it was unscathed. I, however, am scathed. I sprained my wrist, my knees are bruised, and just about everything aches this morning. It's fishing as a contact sport.

Miles,

Recycle those pads and guards from your inline skating days!

The Rap never fails.  I was up there last weekend and had about the same day as you, minus the 14" trout. But still was sunny and dry so no complaints.

Thanks,
