Personally, I have bear spray and some snake proof gaiters to wear.  I'm going to be fishing in some outback areas this year...better safer than sorry..

If you're not in Grizzly country bears are way more scared of us.  Every bear I've ever seen in the mid Atlantic ran away from me faster than I thought was ursinely possible.

Jim,  I checked into the possibility of carrying an anti bear revolver, as a last ditch defense, on US Forestry lands...especially in the northern Rockies and in Alaska.  Can't be done legally unless one has a concealed carry permit if I read that right on the GW Forrest web site.
