It has come time for me to move on from my vintage Thompson model a to something a bit more versatile. I'm choosing between the Renzetti Traveler, Peak Rotary and Refal Medallion Rotary. Found them all for within the same price point, give or take 10 bucks.

For those with experience of the three, I'd really appreciate any advice/feedback.

I have the Peak Rotary. I love it. There are lots of accessories you can get, and changing out jaws is simple. The only downside I have found is they use a different size allen wrench for basically every screw, so you wind up with a few different wrenches you need to keep track of.

I have the Renzetti Traveler and I love it. I've tied flies sized #24 through #2/0 and have encountered no issues with the vise.

I tied on a traveler for 7 years before I got a Regal. I still have it and still use it from time to time. Awesome vice , I would highly recommend it.

I love my Regal (non rotary), but other than giving you a quicker way to get the hook into the vise, it doesn't provided much functionality over the Thomson (don't knock the model A).

I also have a Renzetti traveler for rotary use.  I am still learning to take advantage of it.

If you want a Rotary vise, I would go with the Renzetti, just because it is the standard by which other Rotary vises are measured.
However, I wouldn't get rid of the Model A.  I don't spin deer hair on the Traveler or tie big flies with a lot of tension.  It holds the hook fine, but the support is a bit more flexible and I don't like the feel of that.

I tie daily these days, the ease of use makes it a no brainer for me. The Regal has been my choice for 11 years. I've tied on Renzetti and Griffin. I also use a TyWheel on my Regal.

I have no need for the rotary function so I use the stainless jaw.

My production vise is a Regal and I love it - have a number of accessories
including the tube head and the LIRS #3 head for salt water work. Their
folks in Loveland, Colorado are great to work with. My travel vise is a
Renzetti Traveler and it has been flawless - a little smaller than the Peak,
but solid as a rock.
You can't wrong with either. Have never used a Regal.

Has anyone sent a Regal head back for jaw replacement?  Mine is 20 years old and there are a few chips and I thought I would send it back for the $50 to get the jaws replaced.  The chips aren't bad (although it makes holding size 22's a bit difficult).  I'm wondering if I'm going to regret it, and if the new jaws are going to be weaker.

The only reason I had reason to send mine back was for sticky jaws. I spoke to them at Somerset. Their advice was WD40. It worked. I too have a few tiny chips. Mine haven't warranted a tune up. Give them a call. Their customer service is quite knowledgeable.

I like my Regal (non rotary, big game jaws), but it is the only nice vise I had. I think in that price range you can't really go wrong. The big game jaws are nice for tying larger flies and I can still manage size 18's. I haven't tried to tie anything smaller on them.

I have the Renzetti Traveler and I love it. I've used it (with the standard jaws) for everything from size 24 to size 8/0. It certainly requires more adjustments to go between hook sizes than a Regal, but I really like the rotary feature and use that a lot.

I'll have it with me at Beer Tie on Monday - you're welcome to try it out if you like!

We own a dynaking pro and a regal, rotary, fancy, something or other.  They are both the last vise you would ever need.

I'm partial to my dynaking simply because I understand all of its little nuances with regard to "hook behavior".

Any vise the cost more than $200 is probably going to be your favorite.  Of course, I survived on a cheap no-name $30 one for about a year too.

Both brand names instill a feeling of nobility under hard use, or possible thoughts of regicide depending upon the weather.

I've had my Renzetti Traveler for 25 years. On my second set of jaws because I did something stupid mounting a hook...About a year ago I added a pedestal base so no more mounting issues at Beer Ties. The Peak and Anvil rotaries look pretty good and it seems most who tie on them like them.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Still getting by with the Thompson model A until I make up my mind. Leaning towards the renzetti traveler for versatility but love the regal line. Either way, I know what I'm getting for x-mas.

I have a Peak rotary for years now, and it's very solid. I sprung for the little brass handle and other mods and I think it made it nicer. I agree one doesn't NEED rotary for most things but since I have it, I use it. Usually just to flip the fly over and get a better look/access. The others you mention are all very nice. Regals are super simple and they do what a vise needs to do.

I'm still hoping when I meet April Vokey someday she'll be super impressed that I tie on a Peak, like she does. Ahhh, April April April... It's not why I got it but you know every little thing helps
