After a a rough skunking down at Fletchers cove for stripers, Trent Jones and I went after some Bronebacks on the upper Potomac. Fishing was really good. At on point I think we had 10 fish on roughly 12 casts . Crayfish patterns seemed to be the ticket.

Upper Potomac (above little falls). Look for small islands that create back eddies and current breaks. Creek mouths are a good place to find pre spawn fish as well.

Awesome fish guys. Nothing better than some overcast/rainy conditions for smallies.

Nice. The fish in the Potomac are much better sized this year. My first of the year, taken last week, was a beaut. Also added a hellgramite and a bunch of golden stonefly nymphs to my fish tank from the same session! ...any tips on how to keep my hellgramite alive hivemind, a.k.a. Gene?

Good water quality!  No, I have to admit to never having kept those critters....so I would just spout empirical evidence based upon where they're found.  That said, you can find them in places with poorer water quality at times.  What type of tank are you running?  Rob has a pretty interesting invert tank going on, possibly with some native (or at least locally collected) fish too (I can't remember).

I'm dealing with hair algae and remembering why I quit my tank obsession 10 years ago -- lol.

Internet research indicates they eat other invertebrates, so I've just been adding more nymphs every time I get out in warmwater. I tried to grow a baby crayfish but he died after a couple of months. RIP Bugsy :(   I'm turning my 10 gallon tank into a local species display though!

Rob, care to weigh in?

They'll eat everything. Rather boring as they don't do much. Remove them from rocks and drop them in. Watch how they move. There isn't a fly out there that mimics their free fall wriggle.

Yeah, I just had to turn the rock over to make sure he was still alive... it's cool having a dinosaur in my tank though. And if he hatches, I'm going to enjoy the heck out of my wife's reaction.

Nope. The low water levels (that now appear to be gone) meant I was able to wade pretty much straight across the river, although it was pretty chancy in the thalweg of the riffle. Definitely a huge help to carry a wading staff on smallie rivers like the Potomac.

In the SNP we call those "bear beaters".
