This healthy largemouth was my only hookup for today at Lake Needwood in MD. It propelled itself out of the water multiple times as it attempted to throw the hook. Tons of tiny bluegill in there as well.

There was another angler hooking up every few casts on spinning gear and with what seemed to be a popper with a bucktail teaser trailing behind it.

Anybody have any top water fly suggestions for targeting bass in still water?
The gurgler?

Sr. Denito:

In addition to poppers and gurglers,  try almost anything that floats and makes a commotion At Widewater 2 weeks ago the two bass I caught were taken on unweighted Yuck Bugs. Almost anything that makes a commotion on the surface will tempt Mr. Largemeouth.

I live not far from Needwood. Did you fish from a boat? the bank? That little pond behind Needwood Mansion?
Find me at the Beer Tie if you're coming tonight, I'm tying gurglers.

Gurglers look cool and I enjoy tying them, but to be honest I've only caught huge bluegill on them ;).  One day I'll get a nice LMB, I'm sure of it.

We've been catching most of our bass lately (including some pretty fat ones) on #10-12 marabou minnows....well, actually filoplume minnows actually (Rich pointed this out -- my rooster butt feathers).  The only thing I can figure is that they look similar to mummichogs and/or banded killifish that are thick around here.  You can cast 'em on a 3-4 weight and catch darn-near anything.

See you guys at the tie!

I fished from a bank in a corner where the water seemed to get deep almost immediately. I do intend on fishing there more often as I don't live too far from lake Needwood either. I would like to rent one of the boats and explore more of the lake itself.

I assume the smaller lake produces as well? Any bass reports over in lake Bernard frank?

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend this beer tie but I'll definitely be at the next one. Do plan on whipping up some gurglers though!

Enjoy the beer tie and hope you guys can stay dry.

Well ~ 8pm we didn't stay dry after the tie - while I had only 50 yds to go to the car, I was soaked when I got there.  Gene (TurbineBlade) and Beth left right before me, resigned to getting soaked. What was really irksome was that once I was on the GW heading to the Beltway, the rain cleared out by the time I hit the first scenic overlook after Spout Run.

I haven't tried Lake Frank in a while, didn't have luck the couple times I did fish it. My guess would be the dam face is the best place with a fly rod. Try tying larger gurglers on bigger hooks for bass.

Gene, see this about pheasant feathers, such as the aftershafts (mis-IDed acc. to Gartside as "filo plume"), see http://bit.ly/14SOdmn

Ah yea the showers were on and off.  I managed to tie a few charteusse gurglers on some size 4 hooks.
Would you recommend bumping up to a 1/0?

Tonight I plan on tying some more up with two pieces of foam, a marabou tail, and rubber legs.  Maybe more largie appropriate?

Also considering buying some booglebugs.

I've never targeted fish on top water flies yet.  But hope to be able to post a success story soon!

Hi, was up at Needwood last week and couldn't get past the small bluegills you mention. What time of day did you have luck?

gurgler's are ok, but I've had better luck with stealth bombers recently.  The only problem is keeping the bluegill off.

Namfos-

I fished WW this am before the storm.  I used a gurgler and got plenty of hits but I did not land anything.   I wonder if the fly was too big and the hook too small.  I tied the below on a long shank size 8 hook.  Its gurgler silly leg combo.

It got action but must have been too small fish.

Nedak, I think your hook up problems stem from not enough clearance for the point of the hook. IOW, the body's too big. Plus, the rubber legs look mighty large and probably interfere too. If they were splayed out in a horizontal plane they might not be a problem or try more flexible legs or use marabou. Longer shanked hooks and/or hooks with a wider gap will likely help too, say Mustad 3366 which come in a variety of sizes (including size 8) or "stinger" hooks . See attached.

I recently encountered some hookup issues as well.
Don't feel it is a hook clearance problem.  I think its possibly hook size / hook style.  Could also be that I didn't set the hook well enough.  I had two smaller bass come off shortly after having them on for a few seconds.
