Anyone have knowledge of muskies being in the lower reaches of the Doah, and Potomac? They are well known on the upper reaches, but was wondering if they were worth pursuing in areas closer to home like downstream of Front Royal, and Point of Rocks?

While I've never targeted them in those regions personally, a guide I used to fish with often would hit the Shenandoah for musky (for fun, he wouldn't guide for them) near Front Royal. No idea how big of a population is in that stretch, but he says they're there.

I don't think they're all over the place in the Tidal Potomac, but this fish was supposedly shocked up at Fletcher's in 2010:

There was a sighting of one in the Tidal Basin over the summer. Not reputable.

I'm headed down toward Luray this winter to look for some. Last one I saw was in Burke Lake a few years back. I used to hear about a lake in MoCo that had a lot.

Wow that's crazy they shocked a musky down at Fletchers! I'm sure they are rare down there though. I too have heard they are below Front Royal. Is anyone familiar with the new launch site in NOVA at White's Ford?  Looks like it's abut an 8 mile float from Point of Rocks. It's also not far below the Dickerson outflow. I've heard some reports of Musky's around this area of the Potomac, but not sure how many are actually there.

Rob, I think you're talking about Little Seneca Lake in Black Hills Regional Park. I've also heard about the in Lake Needwood, but that was before they drained it and dredged it. Not sure if they're still in there.

I would imagine they would be tough to catch in the lakes on fly. Maybe in the early spring when there're shallow?

can't tell you where to cast, but there are a fair number throughout both the main stems of Shenandoah and Potomac... typical deep holes w/ a slow current pushing through and structure. Big bright sunfish size flies that can dance at least 5ft down work. it's tough fishing.  i've never seen any in the tidal sections but who knows...

That's Luke from DDOE -- I miss those guys over there at the AREC.  They're a good group of fisheries biologists.

Mossy Creek does guide trips for Musky. They list a few waters on the site:

I know of a couple places on both the NF and SF Doah that hold Muskies all year. They all have the same thing in common. A creek emptying into the main river with deeper water nearby.

Ok thanks for the tip! If any of you are interested in doing a musky trip, I've got a canoe, and some 10 weights to offer.
