Does the Arlington Orvis store normally offer the fly tying 101 class and will they be doing so this year?  I took my son and wife to the fly fishing 101 over the summer and would really like to take them to the fly tying as well.  My son is very interested and I'm getting him his own waders for xmas; he might as well be throwing his own flies!

Thanks,
Josh

I'm not certain about Orvis, but one alternative is joining the Beer Ties held in the back room of Whitlow's behind the Orvis store. They have a learning table where a couple of our resident fly tying experts teach fly tying. I believe materials and equipment is provided for those who need it. I know what you're thinking... bring my son to a BEER tie? At a bar?! It isn't like it sounds. It's a very family friendly atmosphere, and some of the adults are enjoying a beer or two while tying.

All of the area Orvis stores will offer the free Fly Tying 101 classes on Saturday mornings in January and February.

Jeff,

I've thought about the beer tie and would definitely bring him if we lived closer.  I work here in Arlington, but we live near Annapolis so unfortunately I can't get him here on a Monday night.

Josh- check out the free state fly fishers. They meet near Annapolis and have their own clubhouse loaded with movies, books, and tying stuff.
