I'll be traveling to Hawaii to present at a conference, and being a poor grad student cannot afford a guide for a day...so I am crowdsourcing.  I would really like to just catch some fish in the surf, not necessarily targeting bonefish, so I was wondering if any of you have experience fishing in Oahu.  Preferably, walking/bus ride distance from Waikiki (the main tourist area)....any advice on locations and flies to use would be greatly appreciated.  I will be stopping by Nervous Waters in Honolulu to get some flies, but would like to tie some up ahead of time.

Thanks!

I caught a little barracuda and some lizardfish near this bridge.

Sounds like a fun trip, but I am going to put a plug in for leaving the rod at home. Hawaii has basically zero regs for inshore fishing, so there are not a lot of fish left for DIY anglers. I went several years ago, and didn't catch anything. I fished off Oahu, Kauai, and the big island. Maybe Rob Snowhite will jump in with his experience on Oahu; he caught some small fish, if I recall.

If I ever go back, I won't take a rod. I'll spend more time surfing.

Well, I'm not going to do that.  At a minimum I'm going to go to Lake Wilson and fish for Peacock Bass, so I wanted to see what else there was in terms of opportunities in the surf.

Bring the rod.

Never been but this video shows them walking onto a flat so i would imagine if you put in some effort, time, and research you should be able to find something.

Do what you gotta do, I guess. Definitely post a trip report when you get back. Are you going to ISA?

Hi. It is doable. I have done it. Besides a couple of hours walking the flat is fun even if you blank. What is your email and I will send more details. Easier to email.

Suspect they went to Kuliouou Beach Park at the end of Bay Street in Hawaii Kai area and walked out. Can’t post photo or map but if you google you can see flats. Out near channel is good. There is some fencing in weather. And then walking toward diamond head.

I fished Lake Wilson last year. I researched whether it could be done from shore. I ended up hiring a guide and was glad for it - boat is definitely the way to go. The very few spots that are shore accessible tend to be occupied by homeless folks. The banks are really steep everywhere else, and I was keeping an eye out. Fish weren't super plentiful that day (it was kind of cold for HI when I went in February) but I did get a few small peacocks, and had a really cool shot at a 5 lber. Oh, and technically, you're not allowed to guide on Lake Wilson, so it's kind of hush hush, but I'll send you the name of my guy if you wanted.

Listen to Cary re: the accessible shore spots. Wish I had known to ask her before I went!
