I was watching the news last night as they interviewed people buying powerball tickets and one guy said "I won't win, but it's good dinner conversation to talk about what you would do". So I pose this question:
If you won the powerball and money was no option, where would be your first fly fishing destination?

Probably somewhere in Canada where I could fish for grayling in a small stream.

I'd say Christmas Island, but that trip actually is about the same as or less than a trip to the Caribbean, minus travel. So I'm a bit torn between Seychelles for GT, Tanzania for tigerfish, or Mongolia for taimen. Hell, if I'm winning a billion, I'd just do them all.

BTW -- remember folks:  contrary to what people in finance will tell you, you can't win if you don't play!  Actually, the more tickets you buy the better your odds!

You should buy a lot of tickets and post pictures of them on here.  The most tickets wins the....prize.  ;)

There are places i would rather fish but I would probably pick the alta just because of how expensive it is for a week. Most other places are expensive but generally not so expensive that I wouldn't be able to afford them on my own.  I doubt I would ever be able to come up with the $30k or whatever it is for a week on the alta.

Seychelles and kamchatka are great choices as well.  Maybe a week on the Ponoi.  Those trips in bolivia for golden dorado look pretty sweet too.

Xmas Island, Seychelles, Alaska (coastal rainforest steelhead in turquoise green water in solitude), Thailand etc. All the exotic places you see at the Film Tour.

Frankly I wouldn't mind parking a boat at Fletcher's for a month during the spring run or buy a motor home and traverse the US like the Fly Fishing America show on Saturday mornings in the 90s on ESPN. Though he drove a jeep.

I had a billionaire customer when working in the Florida keys. He'd book one our guides almost daily. Mr. K would show up at the docks in the morning with his ridiculously tricked out flats boat to pick up the guides and have them pole his skiff around. He had it good. On a side note, Kathy Lee was not allowed in our shop. I can tell that story at beer tie.

It appears to be the end of 4MR, roughly 20' from where a "no trespass" sign marks the airport (on the North bank where the bike trail loops around).  Beth and I have caught a few nice carp in the exact spot on bait, but fly fishing wouldn't seem to be too practical under most conditions.

Gene,

You pointed out the exact spot.

I have caught carp with fly there before, but for a couple of years, I didn't have luck.

These two carp were caught on a carbon fiber telescopic rod with bait.

Cool -- that set up looks very European, only without the baitrunner spinning reels ;).

I used to chain my bike up to the fence there and bottom fish on the weekends (and after work in the summer).  That's a good section to intercept carp coming off the Potomac.  I'm ashamed to admit I lost a very large carp there due to a poorly-tied knot.  Beth saw it happen -- that was when I made myself learn some new knots.

Nice fish!

I'd be heading back to Isla Holbox, Mexico gunning for tarpon. Only difference: This time I'd own the island.

This would be tough to choose, but I think I have a solution. A good fly fishing lodge runs about $5k-10k per week for all-inclusive stays, another $1k for flights makes a week run about $8,500 per person for almost all expenses. For under a million bucks, my first fly fishing trip would be a global week to week stay at a different lodge every week for a year with a guest.

Doesn't answer your question but whatever, and oh yeah, I'd be back for Beer Ties.

Good point Dalton. Now that we're at $1.3B with a $800M cash value, that means you'll come away with about $400M or so after taxes if you take the cash prize. Even using the high end of your estimates, you don't make a dent in your winnings taking a year off and doing nothing but fish. Do I hear a TPFR pool?

Brine,

About a year ago, I was diagnosed with type A diabetes and it hit me real bad. I joined a hiking group and I hike every Saturday and its been a little more than a year now. I got my sugar level under control. I have been passing through many brook trout streams in the shenandoah mountains while hiking, but with a group, it is just impossible to fish. I'm not as active as much as before here in TPFR, I'm still fishing with many types of techniques. Here are some pics.

Tight Lines,

Todd
