Hi there,

I typically visit DC a few times a year for work, and I have always wanted to fish the Potomac. I'm happy I stumbled across this group a couple of months ahead of my next visit. I'll definitely be lurking around to get up to speed before my next visit. You folks have a unique and exciting fishery, and I can't wait to partake!

PS--I looked at the FAQs and read that you all throw lots of clousers. Below are some of my staples for fishing the gulf coast (clousers left, LaFleur's Charlies right). These are pretty ragged out from last fall--time to tie some more. I'd be appreciative of any recommendations on color patters. For clousers, I typically tie lots of white/white and white/chartreuse with crystal flash, along with a few more natural looking patterns for the 2 days a year I'm in clear-ish water.

Cheers and tight lines,
William

William - those flies are perfect. Nearly everything that swims in the Potomac will eat a Clouser. And Chartreuse over White is always a solid choice. Might also tie up some that are all black, just to cover both ends of the spectrum.

Looking forward to hearing about your successes next time you're in town!

Hey Sean and Scott,

Thanks for the info and warm welcome. I typically work around Dupont Circle and ride a bike down to the waterfront at Georgetown. To maximize fishing time, I was thinking of starting right in that area, maybe from the waterfront heading upriver. Certainly open to suggestions. So much water!

I love black/black streamers--great suggestion.

I don't have definite schedule yet, but I think I'll be in DC toward the end of September.

Cheers,
William

Another spot definitely worth putting in some time (especially in low-light conditions) is the Tidal Basin.

Blue over white Clousers worked for us today. Plenty of schoolies in the system. I tie my Clousers on a size 4 Gamakatsu B10S.

Don’t forget to put a dropper behind your Clouser, a smaller streamer or nymph.

Cool, will do on the droppers and the gloves. I never would have thought of either. (I'm admittedly more excited about the droppers. Ha.)

I've had good luck with chartreuse over a very very pale pink Clousers up around Harpers Ferry. Murdich Minnows and CK Baitfish work well too. Poppers for smallmouth are always fun.

Does anyone have information about how the upper Potomac is fishing for smallmouth?

I suggest asking Travis Edens (ted...@kfguideservices.com) who guides out of the Harper’s Ferry / Brunswick area. Great guy and guide!

Facebook chatter from some of the NoVA fishing groups is that it is not fishing great, presumably due to all the rain.
