What's the deal with this cicada hatch all the kids are talking about?

I've read that the 17-yr. cicada hatch is/was supposed to start in mid-May, and that Ohio, West Virginia, and "surrounding areas" will be impacted. Has the hatch actually started yet? Is this hatch likely to hit Real Virginia or Maryland? How long will it likely last for? Is fishing cicada hatches just a dry fly game, or are nymphs in play too?

I'd appreciate any cicada hatch fishing stories and/or advice any of you could offer. Thanks in advance.

Also, will it be possible to fish for bass with cicadas, or just for trout? Sorry for my utter cluelessness about all things cicada.

Don't know anything about the hatch you're talking about, but the smallies will be crushing cicadas when they're around.

Here’s a reply from another forum:

The cicada years since I moved here were 1987 and 2004.  The next one
will be 2021.  There are a few minor broods that appear inbetween these
major years, and there are major years in other areas (that's probably
what you read about 2016, which I think affects some areas well to the
northeast of here), but there should be no significant 17-year cicadas
in and around DC this year.

all that being said, there are usually a few 'off cycle' around, and having one in your small mouth arsenal doesn't hurt.  all summer long.

and rob can tie you one with material from home depot...

Here is website I stumbled upon that has a coverage area map and updates with emergence sightings. Near us it looks like western MD and parts of SW VA are possibilities, but WV is your best bet. I have seen pictures of them already hatched from WV. From what I understand the emergences within that possible area can be hyper local.  Both bass and trout will key in on those big bugs.
