Thought it would be worthwhile to start a thread for people to share tactics and success stories for targeting snakeheads on the fly.  It's starting to warm up, and I know I'm not the only one who wants to catch one of these guys this summer.

I'll start with a not-so-successful outing.  Hit the tidal basin after work yesterday from about 6 to 7, and there were several large snakeheads coming up to the surface sporadically to "sip" air, and sometimes with a bit more of a splash.  I went through my box trying to entice one to bite, trying clousers, gurglers, poppers, a magnum streamer, and even a huge pike bunny.  I've heard snakeheads are vicious, but couldn't get any of them to react.  I even hit one right on the nose with the pike bunny, and it just turned away and went back under.

Do folks find there are times when snakeheads just aren't interested in eating?  When you've had success, has it been sight casting, or has the snakehead just happened across your fly?

Most of my luck as been at the back of the Occoquan.  I have caught all of my snakehead on streamers.  The last one was on a clowser's minnow.

After the fish have spawned and the young snakehead hatch the parents will guard the fry.  If you see this happening I have been told that if you throw a fly into the middle of the fry the parents will attack the fly.

Good luck.

Are they leader shy?  or I guess a better question is, what size tippet have people caught them on?  I've never seen one in person, but I would love to catch and eat one!

I've had similar experience in the tidal basin... they are just not interested. Perhaps they get their fill of rats....

While I have not caught a snakehead on a fly (yet), I have caught several using topwater (frog), soft plastic (creature bait) and a crank bait (Baby 1-).

They will follow any lure and are NOT leader shy. They do have lots of teeth so I would recommend a 20lb leader/tippet.

The deeper into grass and pads you can throw, the better. They are the new thousand cast fish.

Did I say they were delicious?

When you say the "back of the Occoquan" do you mean the river portion before the dam by the water plant?  Or in the reservoir by Sandy Run/Fountainhead Parks?

Thanks

Did anyone ever put together a wiki for this?

Ha I think the thread IS the wiki.

Here's my tip: if you spot a cruising snakehead, hopefully you have a sneaky pete on with 25 lb test, cast relatively far ahead of the fish and let your popper sit. If you're lucky the fish will be curious and come over to inspect. DONT MOVE IT and maybe the fish slurps your fly. The only bites I ever got from a snakehead came after an agonizing wait.

My father has been talking for years about how he has wanted to go fishing for snakehead. I wanted to buy him a new rod and equipment for a snakehead trip. Any recommendations?

Did anyone make it to the Snakehead derby at Pennyfield lock?
Seems like they were pulling out a lot more bass than Snakehead, but there were some big ones up  there.
