Algonquin Provincial Park

This trip spans a weekend, we will be in the Park on Fri afternoon to Sunday morning. Feel free to reach out about local accommodations. We usually stay in Dwight, which is on the west side of the Park. We'll go somewhere for dinner on Saturday evening, that's always a fun part of the trip!

There were 9 Pipits attending the annual Algonquin winter trip on Friday afternoon, 8 on Saturday, and 6 on Sunday...
It was a lovely trip, despite the clear lack of birdlife!

We met at noon on Friday, at the Visitor Centre, and enjoyed flocks of Pine Grosbeaks at the feeders.
A walk around the Logging Museum brought moments of closeness with a few Canada Jays, Chickadees, and Red-breasted Nuthatches.
No Black-backed Woodpeckers to be found though.
At a stop at Spruce Bog gave Geordie the opportunity to show off his sharp spotting skills, as he found a pair of Spruce Grouse in the 3 balsam fir trees just past the bridge off the parking lot!
Upon speaking with Ron Tozer, we learned that somehow these birds know these fir trees are more nutritious than other trees in the area!
We seemed to run into Canada Jays at every stop on this afternoon!

Saturday, despite our best efforts, and the day spent covering ground in the Park, we did not find new birds.
We did however find a lovely cow Moose on the road into Tea Lake Dam, and a couple of lovely Beavers near Turtle Rock on Opeongo Road!
That evening, we had dinner out at the Boiler Room in Dwight, and headed back to Colleen and Geordie's cabin for birthday cake!
What a great day!

Sunday we visited some new spots, and covered previously visited ground. We did see a Ruffed Grouse at the Visitor Centre.
It was at least -20 degrees, very cold, and there just were not many birds to be seen!
We also tried to see the Pine Martin at Mew Lake, but they too were being elusive.
A few of us had a fun lunch in Whitney before parting ways and saying our fond farewells.

This weekend was an opportunity to spend much mindful time with nature, and each other.
The shared time also gave us time to get to know more about each other, and leave the weekend with deepening friendships.
Thank you everyone for such a fun time, you always make it something special!

Also of note on the weekend - Nicola turned 23, and Colleen turned 59!

Sounds like a fun weekend. I wish I could’ve gone. Canada Jay, Pine Grosbeak and Spruce Grouse would’ve been lifers for me.

See you on the 14th!
Jim.
