Here is the proposed garden layout for the beds and paths.

This Saturday we will do the physical layout.
Bring rakes and wheelbarrows to move the wood chips onto the walkways and out of the beds.   If you happen to have a bundle or three of wooden stakes, we could use them too.   I have some, but likely not enough.
We will dig in the pond liner in the Skep shape .

Other useful tools will be shovels, hoes,  and spading forks.
We also need some hose, of the garden variety.

Water lines will have to follow another day, as there needs to be some administrative approval, which may take some time.  The wheels of a community garden do not spin swiftly at times.

We will start planting next month, with luck, some rain will help.  At least the water will stay in the soil a bit better in October than it does right now.

I am trying to negotiate the keys to the big gate so we can bring in a truck load or two of compost in. Stay tuned on that.

Now is a great time to do cuttings if you have some plants you want to propagate for the garden.   The soil and air temps are still high enough to get roots started.   It'll be a lot tougher in a month.

Should be a beautiful day to spend out in the garden on Saturday.   Bring a lunch if you intend to stay that long.

This Saturday September 16   10-2

Cheers, Phil

Thanks Phil, this is looking great!

And of course, there's bee activity at the garden, too! Jerry Przybylski has generously offered to lead a public hive inspection, so come on down at 10 AM Saturday if you want to watch or be part of it.

Again, it's a great way to see how other people handle bees if you're new-ish at it. (And if you're experienced, it's a relaxing place to talk about bees!)

You can get directions on the apiary page of the club website. I'll be there and I hope to see lots of you, too.

I think there's  room around the hives for up to about 10 people.
Bring at least a veil.
(Why might one need a veil?)

I noticed Argentine ants last time I was at the garden.
I'll show you how I set up ant-bait stations.

I got down and dirty with Phil yesterday at the pollinator garden. The two of us pounded in stakes to plot out the garden area based on his layout. Then I left him high and dry to shovel out the tan bark so I could take a load off my bum foot while watching Jerry do his thing. I took a bunch of pics when he wasn't looking. Or maybe he was.

I picked up some really useful tips during Jerry's hive dive. All the book-learning in the world doesn't beat an in-person experience, no matter how many days months or years you've got under your belt. Any beekeeper that's not me knows something I don't, and the club's pollinator garden is a great resource for the members and the community. -j

Joan,
Thanks for the help in laying out the garden.  It was great to have a dance partner on Saturday.   A lovely day to be out and about.
Like all things, a little fiddling with the design based on the actual space, and it's looking pretty good overall.   I moved the wood chips out of 2 of the beds and added some wood chips to the walkways to make them a bit more intentional looking, and more level.   There is now a bit more of flow to the space than before, and a sense of destination and place.

If you feel the need for some upper body exercise, There are two more beds that need some attention in moving the chips out of the beds and into the walkways.

We will need to build a watering system.  So if you posess that skill, come talk to me.
If you have some spare PVC plumbing pipe and fittings hanging about, we could use those to build the system.

One key plant we are still looking to source is about 20-50 lavender plants.  If you have a source, let me know. I've not done cuttings of that yet, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

Cheers,
