tessedit_write_images not working

I'm attempting to follow the instructions in the documentation on improving image quality, but I'm getting the following error:

$ tesseract bc4.jpg out4 debug.config
Tesseract Open Source OCR Engine v3.02.02 with Leptonica
Error in pixWriteStreamTiff: function not present
Error in pixWrite: pix not written to stream

I've installed Tesseract 3.0.1 via Homebrew on Mac OS X 10.8.5 I've searched for some of the key words in the error message, but all I've come up with are references to the Leptonica source, which hasn't been helpful. Any advice on what's causing this error and how to fix it?

Are you sure? The message state you are running 3.02.02 version.

Build/install leptonica with tiff support if you are using tiff....
