When my wife and I are driving, and she is in the passenger seat, and I go to duck into a store for a few minutes, the car pretty much shuts down while she is sitting there. The climate control stops, the screen goes black and cannot be activated until I get back.

What is the best way for me to make sure that she can remain comfortably in the car while I am away for a few minutes?

Click the temperature settings and on the top center, you'll see a Keep option.

First thing, your wife can just tap on the blank center screen , and the car will wake up again.

There are a few different ways to keep climate on for your passenger while you get out.

1.  Before leaving the car, tap on climate control, and choose the "Keep" climate on, this will keep climate on, but will dock the doors after you walk away. If passenger opens the door without unlocking the car first, car alarm will go off btw.

2. Camp mode, this mode will keep climate on, and car alarm off. And it will keep the car unlocked, unless you lock it yourself via the app.

3 Dog mode as Herb suggested, only issue is your passenger won't be able to use the touch screen at all, and can not open the doors either (it's to prevent pets from accidently press on stuff).  Your wife may be slightly unhappy.

Does leaving your phone in the car work?  I usually do that but if I am going to be more than a couple minutes my wife will likely come as well.

Or instead of hunting around for say dog mode why not just tap the AC on your phone was you're out and way?

Thank you to all for the various suggestions. My wife claims that she was not able to activate the screen, even touching it many times, and therefore could not unlock the doors. She is not the most reliable narrator, so I have to take what she is telling me with a grain of salt. I don’t think you could number her among Tesla‘s greatest fans.

Leaving the air conditioning on is not a problem. I think the “keep” setting would do the job. I don’t have an explanation for the screen not being responsive. And I don’t know why she could not open the door, even if it were locked. Wouldn’t just pressing on the button unlock it?

Yes it should open if she press the open door button, unless child protection mode is on.

Another option is put the Tesla app on her phone, and also make it a key. This way the car will see her phone as a car key, and that may help allowing her to control the vehicle .

Charlie: that’s a good idea. Can I put the app on her phone and make it a key without listing her as a driver?

Yes

I did that years ago so as with all things Tesla it might have changed and I did make my wife a driver at some point.  But my wifi tablet is also a key if that makes any difference.  It has two google ids so I'd think that the one tesla does not know about would be occasionally noticeable and I often use the table for remote start if I want to pull out of the garage for example and I'm too lazy to go get my phone.
