I had an experience this morning when a very nice Tesla mobile service person came to my house to rotate the tires on my 2024 Model 3.

Since it was raining, I volunteered to move my wife's Lexus out of the garage so that he would have more space to work. He was grateful and agreed that would be helpful. My car was in the driveway, not far from the garage.

The garage door was open. As I backed to my wife's car out of the garage, he backed up my Tesla at the same time. As a result, the home link on my Tesla started to close the garage door on the Lexus as I was backing out. This hit and loosened the back wiper cover on the back of my wife's car.

He apologized profusely, and I asked him to talk to his boss to see if possibly we could share the cost of having this piece reattached. There were probably some clips broken off. A few minutes ago, he called me back and said Tesla would not do anything about it.

My wife, of course, is of the belief that Tesla should pay for at least half of this. Tesla disagrees and says they won't pay for anything. I am ambivalent, since even though the garage door was wide open as I was backing out, and I had no way to know that the garage door was coming down, he also probably had no reason to believe that backing up the car would start to close the garage door.

What do you think?

Sometimes bad things happen. It's no fault of either party. He was responsible for fixing your car, he did that just fine. You were doing something with your other car at the time, something of your own volition. Something bad happened because you forgot that the garage door would go down as he moved the Tesla. In this case, I'd say it was your omission. I hope you don't feel bad about it because, well, it's just life right?

I would probably let it go. I'm assuming, of course, that we're not talking $1,000 to fix the issue on your wife's car.

I cannot see how you can expect Tesla to take any blame or pay for any damages given the scenario that you presented.  The guy was just doing his job.

I don’t disagree with any of you. As I said, I was ambivalent about how this should work itself out afterward. After taking the car to Lexus this afternoon it turns out the damage will be $2175.

Yikes.... Sounds like it was more damage than anticipated..... I think if it were me, I would send them a letter explaining the situation and asking for some reimbursement (assuming insurance won't cover it). Of course, that mobile tech may be impacted by this, so if you like him/her, you might want to take that into consideration.

I went to Tesla in Springfield the next day to have a word with whatever senior service people were available. They have a wonderful woman there who is a true empath. Such a good listener, and she feels your pain so acutely. But the answer was still no, as I expected. I actually went there as a courtesy to my wife, who was understandably upset that her car was damaged and thought Tesla was at least partially responsible.

All good moves on your part, if I may say and it’s just an unfortunate situation, but gladly no one was hurt.

In a year, you guys won’t even remember it and can hopefully share a laugh about it together.

Enjoy your weekend!
