OK,  I admit it I'm stuck.

I've got Zabbix running and reading something by SNMP off our core switch an AT-9924ts.  But I can't find the actual OID for the traffic on the ports.  The port description is easy to find with a grep, but which one is the traffic?

e.g

iso.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2.30 = STRING: "LG1 ELC"

I've googled and SNMP walked and read docs til my head is spinning.

I've had MRTG running forever and I've got PRTG reading 100 sensors to get more detailed data, but the cost of the PRTG license for more is a hard sell to the boss.

So mrtg just magically matches the descriptions with the interface stats, but doesn't show me the OID's anywhere in the config files it builds, and PRTG just works.  zabbix is not so easy.

Anyone?

Hey Craig,

I set this up on Friday before leaving for the day but didn't play with it. I just have Zabbix as a datasource for Grafana.

Just looking at my instance, on a x610 (sorry, no 9924's here) I can see Zabbix picked up each port's traffic as a graph automagically.
Perhaps the 9924 series is sending SMNP that Zabbix has no template for?

The switch also calls itself an x900..

I'll set it up again in zabbix and see if it does it automagically..

Hrm.
I'm having a look at matching the OID's via SNMPwalk on The Dude  from our x908 to get an idea of the layout. Looks like a long 'walk' to get the data....

So far I've only related it to the Description OID but will continue to look as it seems that our Dude instance has dropped monitoring SNMP traffic flow currently.

I assume you got your macro and everything correct in Zabbix and are using the ATread community?

Our HP switches are monitored using the generic ‘Template SNMP Device’ template.

The SMTP OID the template uses is:

 IF-MIB::ifInOctets.{#SNMPINDEX} for incoming and

  IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.{#SNMPINDEX} for outgoing traffic.

Will that template work for you?

Ah, a couple of good clues in all that..

I did have the SNMP community set, but...

It was getting the right template that sorted it..  Lots of port data now and I can tell what's what.

Many thanks for now...

Nice one.

I’ve found it can take a hour or two for all the data to trickle in. You might need to wait a wee bit before you start seeing data points.

I’d also suggest checking our Grafana for pretties graphs and metrics. You can add Zabbix as a data source.

Yes I can see a few points on the 5min graphs now.

(should have asked a week ago...)

thanks all,
Craig

OK, I've got some decent looking data in zabbix now, and got Grafana
making pretty graphs of it..

But I'm stuck again.. the Items are getting named with the #IFAlias
not being replaced.

like this:
Interface port1({#IFAlias}): Bits received 2018-06-07 03:34:45
52.9 Kbps-6.8 Kbps

the snmpwalk shows me ifAlias is not a thing for my switch, but
ifDescr is and is where the port name in switch gui ends up.

I tried changing the item prototypes in the template to ifDescr, but
then I just get an ifDescr not replaced.

I get Interface port1({#IFAlias}): Bits received 2018-06-07 03:34:45
52.9 Kbps-6.8 Kbps

or Interface port1({#IFDescr}): Bits received 2018-06-07 03:34:45
52.9 Kbps-6.8 Kbps

but what I'd like is Interface port1(Link to AG3 Admin): Bits received
2018-06-07 03:34:45 52.9 Kbps-6.8 Kbps

anyone?

Hey Craig,

I think I grasped what you meant there.

I will take a stab and stay you are changing the values in the interface discovery rule for the SNMP v2 template?
If so keep in mind there's a Update Interval (default 3600) before it will run again. You can drop this really low but I found the CPU on my Zabbix appliance went up much higher when I did this for a few discovery rules.

For my x610's or xs916's I see the discovery rule picks up my port groups and the port numbers which is more than enough to identify for my graphs. I ignored the IfDescr though it shows in my snmpwalks too.

Honestly leaving everything at default has worked well for me thus far! Sorry if it's not much help.

The #ifalias is not being replaced by the actual value.  If I edit it to #ifdescr  it's still just showing as #idescr  the substitution never happens...

Turned out it was case sensitive.  {#IFDESCR} works in the item prototype.

thanks all,
Craig

Case sensitive! I’ll have to remember that one.

Enjoy graphing your network, It get quite addictive :D

and if you edit the description on the GUI on the AT switch..   it changes itself right in zabbix and then on into grafana. Yay!

Dredging up this 5 year old thread.

I have replaced our old core switch with an x610 as the old 9924 had an alert for a failed fan.
zabbix is supposed to get the traffic stats via snmp every 3 minutes like it does for the 8000's but seems to only get the data roughly every 30minutes.

I can't see a setting on the x610 terminal that would affect that.

ring any bells for anyone?

thanks,
Craig

Is the update interval for those items set to 3m in zabbix? I always thought zabbix collected the data at whatever time period is defined manually or in the template.
Data Collection > Hosts > Items

I don't have the correct template set for my 8000s / x610s (only using Template Module Generic SNMPv2)  - I wonder if you could share yours? as I only have ICMP / system descriptions (no port data)
I could do an snmpwalk and work out a few of the important ones.

The template I have, zabbix is capturing 30s, 1m, 15m, 1hr data etc on the switches.

Yes it is

I had to add the snmp OID's to the Ubuntu box to get any sense out of them, and I believe I added the broadcast packets to the template myself..  It was 5yr ago, so it's a bit fuzzy.

template attached, it's based on Template Module Interfaces SNMPv2  I believe Interfaces is what you need.

I added your template to the switches here... if I drill down I see 3m data on the x610 - eg one of the lacp channel groups (this one the aggregate data of the ports connected to the English switch)
For me I see 3m data for those items configured for 3m. A 6hr graph for comparison.

This x610 has nothing special in the config. I'm not sure if I can help now...
