I agree with HORK who agrees with you!
Or there’s the opposite extreme in the States. On one of the hashes I visited, the hare runs with the pack, and announces which way to break the checks. No OnOnOn, becoz the married couples have to return to the bungalow to drive the babysitters home.
But the pack did run the entire trail, and a very scenic trail at that.

Well, with three aging skulls of mush like ours, we can rule the world. 😊
No, really, there are many factors effecting the future of hashing, hopefully COVID will only be a short influence, hard to tell at this point. I am anxiously waiting for SE Asia to open up again, need to get out of the US for a . . . few years.
That article changed topics a few times while writing it . . . I wanted to highlight the changes I am seeing around the hash world, but also put the basic history out there for all those newer hashers who think we really are just a drinking club that happens to wander around on trail from time to time. Bottom line, we will attract what we cater to, and the more we cater to drinkers and “never leave the camp” folks, the more we’ll get. While I certainly appreciate the social aspect of hashing . . . I for one, love the trail above all else. Pure paper trails are the best, they have none of the new marks that are killing the fun for runners.

Trig,
Thanks for that info . . . I just spent about a week updating every hash club in the UK . . . http://thehashhouse.org/index.php?r=chapters/list&country=United%20Kingdom and could find no sign of life with the Westcombe Park H3. For clarity of everyone on the list . . . WPH3 is the oldest ‘currently active’ hash club in the UK. Interesting you mentioned the club card. I got one when I left the Okinawa H3 in 1985, but it was just ceremonial. No requirements or charges.
Is there a website to connect to, or is this one totally underground? I just checked my schedule, and December has room for travel, how does one get an invite to such a gathering as the 50th anniversary?
On On,

Westcombe Park H3
The Oldest hash in Great Britain will be celebrating 50 years of hashing in December 2021.
It is a small hash, that now mostly walks as we still have 2 regular hashers who ran on the first run in 1971, and the majority of the regular attendees are of the more elderly persuasion.
n. It is unusual for GB in that it is strictly male only. We start with a bottle of brandy, have at least one alcoholic sip stop, then after the run we return to the Hare's house to shower, change, and have a meal with plenty of beer and the circle.
Members must have their cards with them at all times, and can be challenged at any time, anywhere to a show of cards. the penalty is an immediate beer (if possible) at the expense of the loser.
A 50th anniv. run is in the planning stages

My experience has been somewhat different than yours, as you’d imagine.
I was never much of a runner. But I’m competitive. So, finding the hash, I was motivated to try to keep up. I’m still not a marathoner. Butt I enjoy the camaraderie, the trails (be they up the side of a mountain, out in the scrub, through city streets with high end shops or down sometimes stinky alleyways. Sure, some people drink too much. We also have tea totalers, lots of songs of questionable propriety, curious neighbors, dogs and weird costumes. I suspect that in the 30s there weren’t many guys running through downtown wearing slinky dresses and shoulder length pink hair sporting a full beard, unless perhaps they were being chased by an angry mob.

TicToc,
That is great to hear, and well done to the first hash in Australia.
