Hi! Starting a new thread here on mapping so that the instructions might be easier to find later on. I'm glad to see the enthusiasm for mapping out existing and proposed trails! I suspect there are a lot more existing/former trails out there than we have mapped.

Here is the url for the draft site plan map: https://drive.usercontent.google.com/download?id=1vBoV7JKnodcKLPA9v8BYldgxxrv9YWzO

It should be georeferenced (meaning if you import it to Avenza and visit the site, it will place your GPS location appropriately on the map). I have not tested that yet! You will need to copy this url and paste it into the app's map library.

Here are some instructions on how to download the map from to your app: https://support.avenzamaps.com/hc/en-us/articles/4961897108628-Importing-maps-from-custom-locations

And then here are instruction on how to record your GPS track:

On my app, the little pencil&ruler icon is on the bottom left of the screen. Something I have learned the hard way is to make sure you stop streaming your track before you get in your car to drive home!

Ulimately we will want to share the tracks with each other. You can learn how to export the .kml of your GPS track here: https://support.avenzamaps.com/hc/en-us/articles/4961670100116-Exporting-and-sharing-map-features

I'm not available to join this Sunday but please reach out with any questions and report back to the group on your experience using Avenza! Later on, we may decide to try different mapping software, so any feedback is valuable.

Thanks Patrick!  We used  Avenza with very old topo to track the old road and where some of its branchs head off to. The old road itself is a fantastic walk through some very beautiful forest!  I could see it as the centerpiece trail of the site that would not need much work to complete. We definitely need to save the “Big Woods Rd” sign that was located near where the group walked with Corey.

I can help on Sunday as well!image0.jpeg

Morning!

Gary, I am thrilled to hear that you're familiar with Avenza, and that you can join us on Sunday.
I am playing with the app. I've downloaded the site plan and am trying to get comfortable with it. I'm better with hands on training but will do my best to get familiar with it before we meet.
Eve and I are planning on being there, and Pat is going to reach out to some folks who are not yet in this forum and perhaps we'll have some more.
What time should we plan on meeting and how much time should we plan on spending?

Bets

I’m completely a Luddite when it comes to Avenza but an happy to learn. I’m familiar with most of the existing trails however.  Where and when should we meet?  Morning is better for me and I was thinking at the proposed parking across from list Bypass ?  Should we have surveyors to make temporary markers?  Hope we are all enjoying the snow!

Good afternoon,

I would expect that we will need at least a couple hours to walk into the forest and explore/trace some of the branches. 1:00 would work for me as well, though I can do earlier if the makes it easier for Eve.

I think meeting at the entrance across from List Bypass is fine, but the access to the “Big Woods Rd.” is at the other Rt 11 access where the gate is to the north.  That might be an easier place to start because getting to the road from the proposed parking area is a bit rough at the moment.

I was thinking of bringing along some hand pruners and a bow saw if we encounter some brush or debris in the way of an obvious path.

Hopefully it won’t be too cold!

What if we meet at noon and the three of us get a couple of hours under our belts?
Linda, you could ping me when you’re free and I can give you an idea if it’s still worth traveling over or if we’re all used up.
Gary, I think we’re going to be great friends! I can bring a pruner too.
Eve, you ok with Gary’s suggestion of meeting further north? I think I know where it is but I’ll look for cars.
Tim, if you’re up for it I’ll be happy to come collect you.
I’ll touch base again with all on Saturday to confirm.
I second Gary’s hope on temperatures!

Sounds good.  I know that location and trail and can show you how it can connect  to the list bypass entrance .  I’ll try to find some tape so we can mark the trail so it will be easier for others to see.

That’s great Martin!

First, a reminder to all to wear bright colors so that you’re not mistaken for a deer.

I went and tested the Avenza mapping tool with Patrick on Thursday and it worked well!

I believe the plan is to meet at NOON at the more northern entrance to the property - on our WQIP site plan the entrance is marked with an orange gate symbol. Gary, when you used that entrance, where did you park? It’s too snowed in to pull onto the road leading in unless you have the right vehicle. (Like a snow cat)

Please confirm with all that you’ll be there (or not) so we can get a timely start.

Dress warmly!!!!!

Betsy

Good evening everyone!  I will be at the North entrance at noon tomorrow. I drove over there this afternoon and hunters must have been using it because there are well packed tracks off of the road up to the gate.

I drove my Tesla up the road to the gate without any problem!  Though turning around could require some extra maneuvering. There is also a pulloff across from the access point that some cars could use.

I would suggest pulling into the entrance and park in a line up to the gate on the existing tracks. It just means the we all have to backup and leave at the same time.

The future entrance/parking area across from List Bypass is similar. There are pickup truck tracks.

I can walk over so there is one less car and i think you can park across the street a tiny bit south of our entrance if that looks better

Hi Patrick and congrats!

As you saw in Betsy’s email, we had a very successful day of tracing existing trails and laying out potential new ones.  I have a couple of traces that I want to share.  I have been following your directions, but it appears that exporting tracks can only be done in Avenza Pro?  Before I purchase the upgrade, I wanted to be sure that this is the case and that there is not some other way like AirDrop or moving the files to another location on my phone.

Thanks!

Hi Gary et al.,
So glad to hear you had success in the field! On my app (I have not upgraded to Pro, either) I am able to export layers but not export maps. I do this by opening the Layers (icon looks like a stack of cards on the bottom right of the map screen), then on the top there is one of those share icons: Image.png
And as long as "layers only" is selected as the data type, I am able to save the file to my Google drive. More clearly described here: https://support.avenzamaps.com/hc/en-us/articles/4961670100116-Exporting-and-sharing-map-features
If that's not working, I don't know! Maybe @Peter Galgani can help us out.

Thanks Patrick!  The default export format was set to the one you have to pay. I changed it to trace only it and will either upload the two traces to the Google Drive or email them as attachments.

Sorry to bother you at home!  You would have loved our exploration yesterday!
