APID in Source Element

I have been experimenting with the APID functionality for exporting to Ancestry.

I tried adding the APID to a Citation Reference and checked the generated GEDCOM file for the APID entry.  No problems.

However, I decided that I would prefer to add the APID to the Source rather than the citation since the source is often cited a few times.  A "One and Done" strategy.

I decided to add the APID to the "comments" section in the "Supplemental Tab" since I do not utilize this field.  I briefly changed the "Full Footnote" definition on the "Output form Tab" by adding [COMMENTS] to the end to test that "comments" was a valid source element.  This worked.

I then tried using TMG to GEDCOM with the Ancestry APID Location set to Source Element and the Ancestry APID Source Element set to COMMENTS.  When I generate a new GEDCOM, the APID tag is missing.  I also tried changing the Ancestry APID Source Element to "comments" and "Comments" (no quotation marks) but it still did not work.

I then tried adding the APID to the source element FILM NUMBER, changed the Ancestry APID Source Element to FILM NUMBER but again there is no APID entry in the subsequently generated GEDCOM file.

I know that I must be missing something simple but I am at a loss.

Thanks!

David

David,

The Comments field in TMG sources is not a “Source Element”. The T2G help doesn’t make that distinction clear, but only fields that are part of the array of Fields on the main tab are actually Sour4ce Elements.

You can only use elements that are referenced in one of the source templates (full footnote, short footnote, bibliography). If “Film Number” in your example was a source element that was referenced in one of the source templates, please let me know.

Hi John,

Thank you for the clarification.

I created a new Source Element called APID and added a reference to it in the source template for the Bibliography.  When I subsequently generated the GEDCOM file, there was still no APID tag.  I then added a reference to this Source Element instead to the Full Footnote template.  This time the APID tag was included in the GEDCOM output.

I modified the Source Template for Full Footnote to have  [HID:][APID][:HID] at the end thinking that this will satisfy the requirement to have the APID Source Element added to the Full Footnote template without the APID being printed in the actual footnote.  Again, this worked fine.

Thank you!

David

David,

Hmm. I can’t recall if T2G processes the bibliography template. I thought it did, but your test indicates it doesn’t. I’ll take a look when I get a chance, but in the meantime, using the HID codes is a good way to proceed.

David -

A little clarification.  You cannot create new Source Elements.  What you do is create a new bane for an existing Source Element.  In doing so, you need to pick the correct Source Element to be re-named and be sure that it is not also used in your Source Template.

What is the original Source Element and what are your Source Templates?

Yes, you are correct that I was imprecise in my description.  I gave the Source Element "Publisher Location" an alternative name of "APID" since looking through my templates that work with data from Ancestry, I was not using this Source Element.

Lee, I want to thank you for all the advise and support you have provided the TMG community.  I have seen your names pop up many times over the years.  As an aside, my Crouch & Horseman ancestors hail from Bath County next to you.

Thanks!

David
