I am new to open source and I really liked this organisation and the work was quite interesting and fascinating to me, I never knew the depth this symbolic computation which was common for us was a tedious task on a computer.
I need help regarding should I first spend time to understand the fundamental files of the repo like symbol.py or should I begin with an issue as some issue were a little overwhelming to be honest?

Alok in my opinion the first thing you should do is to start going through the whole source, read the documentation and the structure. Once that is done you'll be eligible to understand issues and nothing will be overwhelming.
