Rails Girls Summer of Code 2016,

Hi all,

Rails Girls Summer of Code(http://railsgirlssummerofcode.org/) is accepting Project mentors till the 2nd February 2016. SymPy/SymEngine could apply as a mentoring organization.
Mentors need to available in the months of July to September 2016.

Rails Girls Summer of Code is a global fellowship program aimed at bringing more diversity into Open Source. Successful applicants are paid a monthly stipend, from July-September, to work on Open Source projects of their choice.

This [link](http://railsgirlssummerofcode.org/guide/projects/) has FAQs pertaining to the mentoring organization. Do discuss the possibility of SymPy participating.

This would be great step forward!

Sorry to ask here - but why "Rails girls"? I initially thought this
was only for Ruby on Rails projects, but it doesn't look like that's
true.

I am not aware as to why it's called "Rails Girls"

But it is open to all orgs and on the same lines as GSoC.

I guess this doesn't requires us to sponsor the student.

I agree with Aaron here. We barely get enough mentors for GSoC, so I'm not sure how this will be possible. We could apply and then subtract the rails girls mentors from the possible GSoC mentors. There is also no guarantee we'll get all the GSoC spots we want.

In general, it'd be best to determine the number of potential mentors soon and then make the call. I've also added the UCD Symengine team which is going to take some mentor load too.

Though lack of mentors is a real logistical issue (I can't complain because I
won't be mentoring this time). We need to recognize the fact that SymPy, like
most of the other FOSS organizations has a serious lack of women participants.

I highly recommend a reading of the article "Free as in Sexist"[1] which talks
about various issues which drives away women from FOSS. There is a need to
explicitly work on reducing the gender gap in SymPy and programs like Rails
Girls Summer of Code and Outreachy provides good opportunities to do so.

Are you suggesting we should choose these programs instead of GSoC? Or that we should delegate some of our mentors to this program instead of GSoC?

If these programs are equivalent to GSoC but target under-represented communities instead of all people, I wouldn't have a problem with us giving resources to that. All this really needs is a champion that will make it happen. If Sumith, Amit, or you want to take the lead on making this happen I'm guessing you will likely get support from the community. But there will be the logistical issue of delegating our limited resources.

if any of you are excited and driven to have SymPy participate in these projects, then go for it! Just make sure to coordinate with the GSoC effort.

I'm going to second that. If past years are any indication, I'll be the primary person doing work on the GSoC application. So from my point of view, that work is already laid out for me. I don't really have the time to work on that and Rails Girls SOC. 

However, if you want to champion it, submit a proposal, and commit to mentoring, then I am in support of it. We should probably have at least two people willing to mentor, and I wouldn't recommend accepting more than one team. My personal priority will be mentoring GSoC, since I will be org admin if we are accepted, and suborg admin if we aren't accepted and work under the PSF/NumFOCUS). I suppose for SymEngine work you should get Ondrej's approval as well.

Finally, I want to point out that if your goal is to have more female contributors, this can be achieved under the auspices of GSoC as well. What would need to happen is for us to make a conscious effort to attract more proposals from women. I recall hearing from other mentoring organizations at the mentor summit who have done this and been successful.
