Hey guys

Anybody interested in helping me with ideas or construction of a 1RU pull out monitor?

These are plenty in existence, but strangely expensive at $700-2000?

My current thinking is I'll pickup a 1RU draw, such as this one

Tecmojo 1U Rack Drawer,Rack Mount Drawer for 19in Network Equipment/Server/AV Rack or Cabinet Enclosure,Sliding and Lockable Server Rack Drawer - Load-Bearing 22lb (10kg),with Cable Management Holes https://amzn.asia/d/feZM3vt

Then disassemble, place a cutout ? At the back of the draw for power / HDMI passthrough to panel mount connectors on the back of the unit, maybe a cable chain to keep them from getting pinched ?

Then some kind of hinge to hold either a laptop panel? Or a portable monitor (leaning towards something diy as the portable monitors have side mounted connectors and this will look bad / reduce the possible size of display)

Also thinking it would be good to remove the handle from the front? Or the whole front panel? And attach the handle to the top of the monitor so it can be a single pull out and lift up motion?

I would love some ideas for the hinge, something to prop it up, maybe magnets? How to keep cuts clean and not sharp, etc :)

Here's some examples of commercial products

Thanks makers !

Hi lewys,

Interesting idea. I’d definitely go for a portable monitor with VESA mounting threads and just use right-angle connectors on the side.
the benefit of it already having a frame and simple mounting parts would be significant compared to having to make your own entire monitor frame, probably with aluminium and multiple 3D printed parts.

With an off the shelf 17 or 18” portable monitor, you could just design & 3D print a hinge piece with VESA holes that mounts to the sliding shelf and be basically done.

However if you are interested in a 1RU 1920*1200 DVI/HDMI KVM, I actually have one spare. I don’t think it’s in fully working order, but I think all it needs is some replacement buttons for switching inputs. I was going to put it in my rack at home but my desk is so nearby that I just run a cable across.

It would actually be an amazing project to make a 1-u unit that could fit a pi-kvm to be both ip-kvm but also have flip-up vesa-monitor & keyboard too..  its bugged me for years how expensive those setups i used to use at work are.

Thanks Sophie, is that a "traditional KVM" ? Usually they're very deep, my plan is to use this for my road case vmix live streaming PC so it will all need to fit into a 450mm deep road case

A youtuber I follow featured these a while back:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/156254950756

1920 x 1080, 17" monitor with keyboard and touchpad, and should just fit in the dimensions you have.
